We will be releasing new and updated training in May and a new Traffic Safety Activity Guide as well. Be on the look out for the new Student Advisory Board, you will meet them next month. There will also be some changes to the regional consultants. Lots of news and changes, but we will do our best to keep you up to date on all of the above!

Looking Forward: May Activity Guide

Spring is slowly approaching, as things are finally starting to warm up!  As things start to get greener, check out May's activity guide for new Spring programming ideas!

May is Global Youth Traffic Safety Month

Schedule the distracted driving simulator or a "What Do You Consider Lethal" presentation for your school.

The distracted driving simulator and the "What Do You Consider Lethal" are a great way to promote traffic safety to your students.

The distracted driving simulator shows students just how difficult it is to text and drive at the same time, whereas the presentation explains to the risks of driving, especially distracted driving.

To schedule either the distracted simulator or have a presentation at your school contact Robyn Block at [email protected]

Illinois Youth Survey (IYS)
Do you know...
  • The extent of bullying in your school?
  • How alcohol and marijuana use in your school compares to the state?
  • The level of physical activity of your students?

Participating in the 2014 IYS will provide answers to these and many more questions. Best of all, the IYS is free to all Illinois schools in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 (the IYS is funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services). Your school will receive an individualized, easy-to-read report that can be used to assess needs; track progress towards physical, social, and mental health goals; and evaluate student support services.

The IYS is administered online or in paper format and is available in English and Spanish. Schools may also include up to 30 questions of their choice. Detailed information about the IYS is available on the IYS website at iys.cprd.illinois.edu or by calling 888-333-5612.

Happy Club at Hinsdale Central High School

One of our SAB members, Anya Patel, runs her SADD chapter by partnering with a club at Hinsdale Central called the Happy Club, where she is able to promote healthy lifestyle choices to her peers.

Although Anya may have been faced with some difficulties at first, she found a way to make an impact at her school. The Happy Club supports the SADD chapter and its vision at Hinsdale Central, and even uses the resources provided by SADD.

We wanted to highlight this club because of its involvement with SADD even though it may not be known specifically as SADD chapter. So even if your school does not have a SADD chapter, we encourage other clubs to take advantage of our resources from SADD by registering the club even if it is not called a SADD club/chapter.
SADD Speaks - Applications now Available

Applications have now been released for SADD's 2014 advocacy training program, SADD SPEAKs (Students for Policy, Education, Advocacy, and Knowledge).

Twelve students from across the country will be selected for the program, which will consist of online advocacy training in May and June; 2 1/2 days of intensive training onsite in Washington, DC, from June 20-22; leadership responsibility for the advocacy component at the subsequent SADD National Conference for more than 500 attendees; and helping plan a rally on Capitol Hill and visits with elected representatives to press for SADD's legislative priorities.  These teen leaders will then implement advocacy work back home on the state and local level through the remainder of the year.

To be eligible, students must be current sophomores or juniors in high school with an interest in public policy and committed to attend the SADD National Conference this summer.  While students will need to pay for conference registration and their travel to Washington, there is no cost for the SPEAKs program - all meals, hotel, and training costs will be covered for June 20-22.

New AT&T DriveMode Enhancement Helps Parents Monitor their Kids Safety

AT&T's DriveMode app, to help curb the urge to text and drive, just launched its latest enhancement-Parental Alerts.  This enhancement will alert parents when their teens turn the app off and have full access to the phone.  It can also send an alert if Auto-mode or GPS is disabled or a new contact is added to the Allow List.

AT&T DriveMode can automatically start when it registers that the vehicle has reached 25 MPH and turns off after it is certain the vehicle has stopped. If someone texts your son or daughter while the app is on, an auto reply message* is sent to your teen's friends letting them know their friend is driving.

To learn more about the app and these latest enhancements,

visit  att.com/drivemode or check out this video.

Remember no text is worth a life... It Can Wait.
Featured Consultant of the Month:
Catherine Webb

Dr. Catherine Webb is happy to be serving area 6A as an IL SADD Consultant.  She has been an educator for over 30 years in public and private schools.

Before SADD was born she realized that

an organization like SADD, a peer lead group of students was desperately needed in every school across the US.  It was a great day when SADD became a reality.  She wants to motivate schools to utilize all the SADD resources and encourage schools without SADD to become members.

Catherine's main values in life are family and education. She has grown twin daughters Tara and Christine and husband, George that inspire and encourage her to do work for SADD. She considers the students in her life as extended family. Her BA is French and English Major with Education Minor. She earned her MA as an Education Specialist in Administration. Dr. Webb has her PhD in Psychology.
