Reckless and distracted driving is the #1 killer of teens in America.

The "What Do You Consider Lethal?" campaign is an easy-to-use, free program for teachers, safety educators, law enforcement, students, and concerned citizens to implement in their communities aimed at reducing these preventable deaths.

"What's Lethal?" is high-energy and interactive bringing the facts about reckless and distracted driving to teens using innovative videos, materials, and curriculum and encourages teens to take the lead in peer-to-peer messaging.

Click here to learn more about "What Do You Consider Lethal?" or contact Randyl Block at randyl@impactteendrivers.org to inquire about bringing the program to your community.

Illinois Youth Survey (IYS)
Do you know...
  • The extent of bullying in your school?
  • How alcohol and marijuana use in your school compares to the state?
  • The level of physical activity of your students?

Participating in the 2014 IYS will provide answers to these and many more questions. Best of all, the IYS is free to all Illinois schools in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 (the IYS is funded by the Illinois Department of Human Services). Your school will receive an individualized, easy-to-read report that can be used to assess needs; track progress towards physical, social, and mental health goals; and evaluate student support services.

The IYS is administered online or in paper format and is available in English and Spanish. Schools may also include up to 30 questions of their choice. Detailed information about the IYS is available on the IYS website at iys.cprd.illinois.edu or by calling 888-333-5612.

Ashley's Dream Contest

The Foundation for Ashley's Dream memorializes Ashley Easterbrook, a high school student killed by a drunk driver five days before her high school graduation in 1997.

They offer a contest with a scholarship prize for current high school seniors.  Here's how it works: come up with an idea to reduce drunk driving in your community.

Be creative, as there are no restrictions on the type of idea you can submit.  Record a 2-3 minute video outlining your idea and submit it by March 31.

If your video is chosen, you'll receive $1,000 to put your creative idea into action, and when you've completed your project, you'll receive a $2,000 college scholarship!  For more information, visit ashleysdream.org

Kick Butts Day

March 19 is Kick Butts Day, an annual day to stand out, speak up, and seize control in the fight against Big Tobacco.

Each year, tobacco kills 400,000 people - more than traffic crashes, alcohol, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides...combined! Hopefully, your chapter has planned on hosting an event on March 19 when you checked out our monthly activity guide.

No worries if you haven't, the kickbuttsday.org website has plenty of activity ideas for you.  Make sure you register your event so you can be counted as part of this national movement!

Kayla Holthaus

This is Kayla's third and, unfortunately, final year on the Student Advisory Board. She is currently a senior at Canton High School and a leader of my school's SADD chapter and member of the Coalition for Wise Choices in Fulton County.

Outside of school, she loves playing piano and cello and being lazy. After high school, she will be going to college to study biology, chemistry, or both.

She is happy to be a part of Illinois SADD, and grateful to all who help to make SADD great. A special message from Kayla: "Thank you for making my three years on the Student Advisory Board possible!"
