Happy Adopt-a-Cat-Month

Happy Summer, everyone!! Warm weather has finally arrived and with it comes greater risk on the roadways. Your SADD chapter may not be meeting over the summer, but your choice to live the SADD lifestyle is not on vacation. There will be lots of opportunities to celebrate, hang out with friends and family and enjoy some freedom. Please take the opportunity to be a positive role model for those you are spending time with and speak up when needed, to keep your friends and family safe.

Have a safe summer!

$ Available for your Chapter!

Illinois SADD still has $500 grants available for SADD chapters that participate in State Farm's Celebrate My Drive event this fall!  In order to earn your SADD chapter a $500 grant, you must:
  • Log onto www.celebratemydrive.com to register your school (note: you can fill out the registration form for your administrator, but they need to be aware you are registering).
  • Select a date between October 18-26 to hold a local teen safe driving event (book Illinois SADD to come to your school for your event.  We still have some of these dates available!).
  • Contact a local State Farm Agent to let them know you are hosting a Celebrate My Drive event, and you would like their support.
Then, you just email Illinois SADD confirming you have done these three things.  As long as a grant is available, the funds will be reserved for your chapter! Email robyn@ilsadd.org today to reserve your grant - while grants last:)!

Made By Me

Do you have an idea for the newest Above the Influence commercial? If you are between 13 and 18 years old, you're invited to be the creative force behind the newest original Above the Influence ad. Upload or record an appropriate video that explains your idea herebetween now and July 10th!

The videos will go on ATI website so that you and all your friends can vote on which is the best one. The one that gets the most amount of votes will actually get made.

To get inspired, check out what these teens have to saySo what does it mean to be above the influence to you?

Tom the Media Guy

Among the long list of esteemed presentors who attended Dome Shift this year was Tom Guy.

The Media Guy and State Farm are working together in Illinois to promote positive choices through media. Music and Narration shows are designed to make everyone think of their personal choices and how to not only improve their own lives, but improve the lives around them in their community.

This partnership with State Farm allows Tom the Media Guy to offer his programs to schools for the reduced cost of $300 per school (no extra for extra shows if needed). He travels with everything he needs, requiring nothing from the schools he visits except a few helpers and two circuits.

He also offers shows for Middle schools (no driving) and Elementary (respect, working together, and bully issues) in order to get the entire school thinking of making positive choices.

Visit his website for more details, and his contact information.

Reserve the Simulator for your community!

The Distracted Driving Simulator is available this summer for community events! Reserve it ASAP for your school or club!  on our website. The Simulator is a great, hands-on tool that uses cutting-edge technology to increase awareness about dangerous driving. Students can take a virtual drive that demonstrates the realistic effects of trying to multitask behind the wheel.

A group of students at Glenbard South High School gather to test their driving skills.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

Mental health issues can be as disabling as cancer or heart disease and need to be treated appropriately. The stigma that mental illness reflects a lack of will-power or self-discipline is damaging and inaccurate. Did you know that approximately 22.2 % of youth ages 13-18 have a mental health or addictive disorder in any given year?

Youth Mental Health First Aid, provided through the National Council For Behavioral Health, seeks to teach members of the public how to respond in a mental health emergency with youth. This program also helps first-aiders recognize the signs early, before problems become a full-blown crisis, and to offer support to a young person who appears to be in emotional distress.

The more knowledgeable people are about the signs and symptoms of mental disorders and other mental health challenges, the earlier youth and their families will get the help they need. To find a

Youth Mental Health First Aid course near you or to contact instructors to arrange training in your area go to www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org

for more information.

Join us on September 20, 2013 to make some NOYS to prevent Teen Distracted Driving

National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) is hosting the fourth annual Teen Distracted Driving Summit in Washington, DC. This will be an opportunity to review new resources and research and develop a new team of youth leaders working around the country to address teen distracted driving.

Attendees have an opportunity to attend, exhibit, host workshops and network with hundreds of industry leaders that are working to address distracted driving on the local, state, and national levels. Be a part of this nationwide effort to work with youth to support distracted driving prevention efforts and help save the lives of youth on the roads!

Youth teams will be selected from around the country through an application process to attend the 2013 Teen Distracted Driving Prevention Summit and lead year-long efforts in their community. After the Summit, they will develop, implement, and support distracted driving prevention efforts in their local communities and host a Teen Distracted Driving Prevention Summit in their state.

Do you know some great youth who would like to apply to be a part of the Summit?  Deadline for application is July 15, 2013. Click here to apply.
