Happy May!

Wow! I am still recuperating from DomeShift! What a great event we had this year, thanks in large part to our 2013 Student Advisory Board. They did an awesome job planning and working the event. The SAB workshop received excellent evaluations on their Shift Your School presentation. They also looked very cool wearing their SADD shades throughout the event.

Big Thanks to Secretary of State Jesse White for coming out and showing his support of the work that SADD students are doing, he also looked cool in SADD shades!

AT&T was a great new partner this year also. DomeShift 2013 was made possible this year in large part by State Farm. We appreciate everything they did to make this event a success. Be sure to register your school for Celebrate My Drive and get a chance to win a $500 mini-grant too.

School is winding down but we are entering what is known as the 100 deadliest days, be safe, on and off the road. Make good decisions and enjoy your summer!

DomeShift

DomeShift 2013 was a smashing success. Students from all over the state came and participated in an array of workshops and presentations. Many prominent allies of SADD and experts in traffic safety spoke at this year's DomeShift. Students were given the opportunity to drive AT&Ts virtual reality car simulator and later heard a presentation on their popular It Can Wait campaign. This year DomeShift was kicked off by a visit from Secretary of State, Jesse White. Jesse spoke to a packed house and was even seen sporting some SADD sunglasses.

DomeShift 2013 Sponsor, State Farm was represented by Community Affairs Specialist, Jim Slaven. He made sure that everyone was aware of Celebrate My Drive and encouraged all schools present to register for this great opportunity to focus on teen safe driving and a chance to win big bucks for your school!

After working late into the night, the students awoke the next morning to put their advocacy skills into motion. They marched to the Capitol to speak about the importance of continuing to offer Driver's Education as a public service provided in schools. Many met directly with their senators and representatives to champion this issue, and others had the chance to talk with legislative assistants.

Responses to the event overall were very positive with reports that, "The Capitol tour was awesome!" and "I can't wait to take everything back to school and use it."

Start planning now to attend DomeShift 2014 next April 28 and 29 at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Springfield!

What are YOU doing about bullying?

The Student Advisory Board wants to know what you are doing about bullying in your school and community! If you attended the SAB workshop on bullying at DomeShift 2013, you may remember we challenged you to return home and do something about bullying. Start planning something for the beginning of next year, or do something in your community this summer. Whatever you do and wherever you do it, document it! Take pictures, make a video or a sweet presentation, and send it to us! If we think you did something crazy-awesome, you could win stuff! You might even have the chance to present your idea at Dome Shift next year!

Send your ideas to Robyn Block.

Celebrate My Drive

Celebrate My Drive is a community celebration of safe driving habits. It emphasizes the positives of safe choices behind the wheel, as teens celebrate the freedom that comes with the rite of passage of getting a driver's license.

Powered by State Farm, it's also the chance for your high school to win one of 10 $100,000 grants and one of 90 $25,000 grants.

The 2013 celebration goes into overdrive October 18-26, when local State Farm agents will host student-focused events across the North America. It's a chance for communities to rally around young drivers and encourage them to make safe driving choices every time they're behind the wheel.

Your community will also be encouraged to make safe driving commitments on behalf of your high school during the commitment period. The more commitments made, the better your chances of winning a grant for your high school and maybe even a concert by a chart-topping music artist.

Visit www.celebratemydrive.com/ to get registered today! Read below to see how you can earn a $500 mini-grant for your school.

Reserve the Simulator for your school!

It's been a busy school year for the Distracted Driving Simulator! If you have events this Summer, reserve it ASAP for your school or club!  on our website. The Simulator is a great, hands-on tool that uses cutting-edge technology to increase awareness about dangerous driving. Students can take a virtual drive that demonstrates the realistic effects of trying to multitask behind the wheel.

Featured Member of the Month: Michael Bayler

Michael Bayler is a senior at Hinckley-Big Rock High School. While his school does not have a SADD chapter, Michael is involved with pretty much every leadership imaginable. He is very outgoing and unafraid to entertain a crowd with his self-proclaimed dorky/goofy personality.

Michael feels that making good decisions starts with a positive and optimistic state of mind, which is why he believes in SADD's message, and has been more than happy to be part of the Student Advisory Board for the past three years.

Advisors, We Need Your Help

IL SADD wants to hear from you! This Fall, be on the lookout for an IL SADD Advisory Survey! Advisors, please take time to complete this online survey. The information from you will help us identify chapter, training, and communication needs. We really want to hear from you, so we will be offering exciting incentives for completing the survey!

Please email me at: Zoe.Schuler@Prevention.org with suggestions of what you would like to see shared here, and on Facebook or our website. Also, I'd like to spotlight your SADD chapter, so please get in touch with me if your chapter is doing big things (and I am sure it is!).

As always, if you haven't done so, please register your chapter!!

Sincerely,
