Alcohol Awareness Month
This April we are celebrating the 27th annual Alcohol Awareness Month sponsored by National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc
(NCADD) to increase public awareness and understanding aimed at reducing the stigma that too often prevents individuals and families from seeking help. The theme of this year's Alcohol Awareness Month is "Help for Today. Hope For Tomorrow".
There are many ways SADD Chapters can get involved and do activities to raise school and community awareness issues surrounding alcohol abuse. Your SADD chapter can educate your fellow peers by having an activity table set up during lunch times inviting students to learn about the harms of underage drinking. SADD chapters can do an alcohol fact scavenger hunt, inviting classrooms to participate in finding the facts around school and rewarding the winner with a prize like pizza or donuts. Best of all, your SADD chapter can sponsor a community chat around alcohol issues, creating a forum for students, parents, businesses, schools, and others to discuss community issues surrounding alcohol abuse.
For more information about Alcohol Awareness Month visit the NCADD website at www.ncadd.org

MTC 2013-2014 Recruits
Illinois SADD in conjunction with SADD National is offering the Mobilizing the Community: Youth Taking the Lead Program (MTC) to registered SADD chapters for FREE! We are recruiting SADD chapters, school leaders, and communities to participate in MTC for the 2013-2014 school years. If your SADD chapter is looking for an innovative way to address underage drinking in your community then this is for you! Also, it is a way to get your SADD chapter and community on the map, as your group will be included in the SADD national's formal study and evaluation of the program. This is your opportunity to be on the cutting edge of prevention and be recognized. The program is valued at a cost of $250 for the kit and materials and technical assistance valued at 41500.00, that your chapter is able to have for FREE! This campaign was developed by SADD national and IL SADD chapters have been chosen to pilot the campaign, and evaluate the entire process. This is such a great opportunity for your SADD chapter to be acknowledged on the national level. To get your SADD chapter signed up for this incredible opportunity contact Sarah Wright at sarah.wright@prevention.org. Click HERE for more information about the MTC program. Space is very limited for the 2013-2014 MTC pilot groups, so it is important you sign up ASAP! |

Your Actions Matter Campaign
For Alcohol Awareness Month, in April a new statewide underage drinking awareness program, coordinated through the Illinois Liquor Control Commission's (ILCC)
Don't Be Sorry educational program will be unveiled this spring throughout the State of Illinois. The goal of this newly developed activity is to change the behavior of adults who think it is "okay" to give alcohol to minors. In a unique twist, teenagers were asked to create the campaign's logo and slogan. That's right; YOUTH will be educating the ADULTS!
The new materials will be unveiled and ready for distribution to local groups for alcohol awareness month. The youth-designed campaign materials will replace those created for the "Project Sticker Shock" campaign, a popular spring activity in communities throughout the state over the past four years. This year the ILCC is requesting that groups DO NOT POST STICKERS ON ALCOHOL PRODUCTS. New materials have been created this year, including necktags (also known as "bottleneckers" which are placed over the neck of bottles), recyclable grocery tote bags, buttons, drink coasters, and more! For more information about getting involved in the 2013 YOUR ACTIONS MATTER Campaign, visit their website, or contact Ted Penesis, Education Manager for the Illinois Liquor Control Commission at 312-814-2241, or email him at ted.penesis@illinois.gov |

Featured Member of the Month: Nina Rathi
Nina Rathi is a sophomore at Morgan Park Academy. She became a part of Illinois SADD this year and started a chapter at her high school. She plays varsity tennis and participates in culinary club in addition to her involvement with SADD.
On the side beginning last year, she started a business selling bracelets that say "cure addiction" on them in honor of her grandmother who passed away from alcohol addiction two years ago. "I wanted to make an impact and hopefully help people by either struggling with addiction or prevent students from going through it when they are older," Nina explains.
I need your help to increase awareness by selling my bracelets at your schools or by purchasing one for yourself or people you know. 50% of my profits go to Illinois SADD, and the bracelets are $10.00 each online, or $5.00 each when buying in bulk for schools. 50% of my profits go to Illinois SADD. This is a great cause that needs more awareness, so please let me know if you are interested.
