MTC Training
Sarah Wright and Zoe Schuler traveled to Oak Lawn on January 14th to facilitate a Mobilizing the Community Training. MTC is a campaign to fight underage drinking at all levels within the community, starting with peer to peer efforts. Students bring fellow students into the discussion using tools like Buzzcheck. The SADD members in attendance began planning their Buzzcheck promotion with incredible enthusiasm. Their resolve to succeed was impressive-drafting a detailed action plan, and composing a long list of contacts to reach out to. MTC is on track to be a big SADD hit this year. If you are interested in more information about this campaign, email Sarah Wright.

Restorative Justice Conversation
The Restorative Justice Conversation held in Springfield on January 9th was a success, with 80 people in attendance--a large percentage of those being youth. The day included an especially engaging conversation about the utility of teen juries, a peer-to-peer method for restoring justice in a community. The value this holds over the traditional system of disciplinary action was discussed, and attendees practiced strategies for open dialogues such as passing around a Talking Piece. Among the participants were a handful of SADD members from various chapters. The concept of Restorative Justice is one SADD chapters should familiar themselves with, as they may want to consider lobbying for a peer jury in their school. |
