Featured Member of the Month
Dennis J Evashenk
Dennis enjoys flying helicopters, and hopes to own one some day.
Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago, Dennis likes to call Chicago home, but is always looking for new places to travel. He has lived in Brazil as an exchange student and is currently studying in México.

He is pursuing an undergraduate degree at DePaul University studying Business Management, Hospitality Leadership, and International Business. Dennis focuses his time on volunteer work with SADD/IDEA and Rotary International.

In his spare time, Dennis enjoys playing board games with friends and family. He also enjoys biking, learning other languages, and collecting specialty key chains and paperweights. Don't threaten him with a good time.

MTC Training

Sarah Wright and Zoe Schuler traveled to Oak Lawn on January 14th to facilitate a Mobilizing the Community Training. MTC is a campaign to fight underage drinking at all levels within the community, starting with peer to peer efforts. Students bring fellow students into the discussion using tools like Buzzcheck. The SADD members in attendance began planning their Buzzcheck promotion with incredible enthusiasm. Their resolve to succeed was impressive-drafting a detailed action plan, and composing a long list of contacts to reach out to. MTC is on track to be a big SADD hit this year. If you are interested in more information about this campaign, email Sarah Wright

Restorative Justice Conversation

The Restorative Justice Conversation held in Springfield on January 9th was a success, with 80 people in attendance--a large percentage of those being youth. The day included an especially engaging conversation about the utility of teen juries, a peer-to-peer method for restoring justice in a community. The value this holds over the traditional system of disciplinary action was discussed, and attendees practiced strategies for open dialogues such as passing around a Talking Piece. Among the participants were a handful of SADD members from various chapters. The concept of Restorative Justice is one SADD chapters should familiar themselves with, as they may want to consider lobbying for a peer jury in their school.

Reserve the Simulator for your school

wchs simulator

2013 is going to be a busy year for the Distracted Driving Simulator, so visit our websiteand reserve it today! The Simulator is a great, hands-on tool that uses cutting-edge technology to increase awareness about dangerous driving. Students can take a virtual drive that demonstrates the realistic effects of trying to multitask behind the wheel.

Especially if your school is competing in IDOT's Operation Teen Safe Driving--a visit with the Simulator is a perfect addition to your activities.

Hopefully you enjoyed all our SADD updates, and will take advantage of all the exciting opportunities available this month.

Now I want to take a quick moment to introduce myself...My name is Zoe Schuler, and I am a recent addition to Illinois SADD. I have the privilege of putting together our 2013 Newsletters, and am looking forward to getting feedback from all of you. My hunt for newsworthy tidbits will be ongoing, so please email me at Zoe.Schuler@Prevention.org with suggestions of what you would like to see shared here, and on Facebook or our website. Also, I'd like to spotlight a SADD chapter each month, so please get in touch with me if your chapter is doing big things (and I am sure it is!).

I hope you all had a wonderful and safe holiday. The New Year is upon us, and I cannot wait to see what 2013 has in store. What are your resolutions? As always, if you haven't done so, please register your chapter!!

Sincerely,

Zoe Schuler
