We Need Campers

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

What an exciting six months this has been. Since my arrival in January, we have accomplished so much together that has brought new faces into the doors of St. James and increased the church's presence and involvement in the community. We are truly becoming more "radically hospitable," which is a testament to your dedication to this congregation and Christ's Church. And yet, we still have much more to do as we continue to live into the Great Commission.

In a few short weeks, St. James will host its first Summer Music Camp, a wonderful opportunity for young musicians to gather together with some amazing teachers to enhance their musical skills, create a musical community amongst one another, and forge ties between new families and this church. This program has the potential to grow into something incredibly vibrant as the years go on. But in order to pave the way for growth and expansion, we must commit ourselves to making it the best it can be in its first year.

To give an idea of what already has been done, we have hired six highly qualified  music teachers across three disciplines (piano, voice, and guitar); we have advertised in the community through yard signs, posters, press releases, and website articles; we have reached out through our Facebook network and spoken with numerous community organizations to help spread the word. As you can see, much as already been done to promote this camp in our community.

This camp has been in the face of Westwood community members and beyond for several months, and yet are registrations are sadly low. Thus far, we have only three participants signed up, and we must have a minimum of twelve in order to allow the camp to function smoothly while engaging both the students and teachers for the duration of their time spent here. More efforts to advertise are underway this week and next, but there is one crucial element missing: you.

I have often said that the best way to get the word out about anything is by word of mouth. I can send out mailings and put up billboards, but they are ineffective compared to the power you hold simply by making a connection with someone you know who would benefit from the St. James Summer Music Camp. The church is about relationships, and there is such profound meaning in talking with your friends, relatives, and neighbors about this opportunity. Not only does it promote the camp, but it also lives into the mission that Christ calls us to live-to spread the love of Christ through thought, word, and deed. This camp is a beacon of all three, and by reaching out to those who would benefit, you are living into this call.

As much as it pains me to say it, if we do not receive at least twelve registrations by July 1, we will have to cancel the St. James Summer Music Camp and reevaluate its purpose and place in the lifeblood of this church and its ministries.

My plea is simple: reach out to those you know. Parents, friends, neighbors, relatives, day care centers, churches near your home, community hubs, etc. If you see a child ages 9-14 (plus or minus on either side) that might learn something from this music camp, reach out to them. Promotion materials are available in the church office and online to refer to for more information. You will not believe the effectiveness of a personal connection.

I am also happy to announce that I will be continuing on at St. James as your Director of Music in a much greater capacity as we enter into the 2013-14 school year. Together with Jim, the Vestry, and this amazing congregation, we will continue to focus our efforts on how we can shape and mold this place to live into the Great Commission that Christ calls us to fulfill. This Summer Music Camp is one way that we can live into our mission that we accept by becoming a follower of this great Faith.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. I thank you for your dedication to Christ and His church, and I look forward to the bright future we have together.

Love and blessings,

Alex
