Rublev's Icon of the Holy Trinity
Rublev's Icon of the Holy Trinity
I was giggling to myself this morning about how much time and energy early and medieval Christian theologians put into figuring out Christian Trinitarianism. Words like essence, nature, persons, and a really cool one - homoousios (substance).  This was really meaningful and important work for Augustine, Origen, and other early Church Fathers. That being said, two thousand years later does anyone "know" who or how God really "is?" Is the Trinity's meaning something we need to know or is it something we should consider to inform our understanding of God's truest nature?

It seems somewhat silly to think that we can figure out God via the tools of human reasoning and philosophy. Conversely, do we not learn more about ourselves and our truest nature by contemplating and reasoning about God. The Holy Trinity is therefore a very important means of nurturing our Christian faith. Life unfolds in greater beauty as we gain understanding about God and ourselves.

The Rev. Dr. Sam Portaro, Episcopal priest and author writes:  "Of the deep and abiding relationship of God and Jesus is born the Holy Spirit, that powerful spirit arising from and enfolding this powerful, prodigal love of each for the other. God's love for humankind, and Jesus' love for God are each irrational; neither conforms to our human definitions or expectations of love. Each is selfless, and excessively generous."  The Holy Trinity's natural and everlasting life is grounded in love. Hospitality, trust, compassion, and hope abide cooperatively within God's being.  These virtues live at the core of who we should be too.

Perhaps this Sunday's chat Easter Sermon 2with children at our 10 AM service will provide all of us a better, if not more humorous understanding of The Holy Trinity, God's eternal essence, or some other remarkable theological topic. Perhaps we will wind up entirely somewhere else that God the Creator makes, Jesus the Christ embodies, or the Holy Spirit whispers upon us in those minutes. Regardless, it's certain that bidden or unbidden God's Trinitarian loving essence will  be present with us.

Please help us to make our first camp a huge success by sharing the word with your neighbors and friends.

Church Yard Sale Clip ArtWe're just nine days away from our June Extravaganza. Items for St. James' Yard Sale are beginning to arrive downstairs in the Open Space area. It's gonna come upon us like SOON!  Please get with Garyne or John about you'll be volunteering.  The pricing of the items will begin early next week. We'll be setting up very early on Sat. Morning, June 1.

The next day, Sunday, June 2, is our Church picnic at Harvest Home Park. Worship begins @ 10:00 AM.  The music and Word will be uplifting and it'll be fun to celebrate Jesus' presence in a different setting. Then, the food, fun, and more music will begin. Both of these events should be lots of fun and a chance to welcome summer's arrival with one another. Cya then!

Here's something you might just hear at one or both of those events.
