NCIBA Fall Discovery Show Taking Shape
Whether It's Books, Authors, or Knowledge,
Our Show Is All About DISCOVERY

As we reported last month, our trade show has been renamed the Fall Discovery Show. While we will still encourage ordering at the show and continue to hold our order raffle, we want the exhibits to have value above and beyond that. So the focus will be on discovering new books on the show floor, discovering new authors at our events, discovering new ideas at education sessions, and discovering new and old friends throughout the two days.

Much of the show's schedule will be familiar to show goers. On Thursday, we'll offer education and rep picks sessions, along with our Author Buzz Lunch and Children's Tea (confirmed speakers thus far - Raina Telgemeier & Kazu Kibuishi, who are touring together, and Scott Westerfeld). In addition, the show floor will be open from 5-7pm in conjunction with our Welcome Reception, which will feature something special from Phaidon's Mexico: the Cookbook.

Friday will offer more Rep Picks, our adult author brunch (confirmed speakers to date include Garth Stein and Sarah Thornton), the popular Author Reception, show floor exhibits, and other surprises.

More to come - stay tuned!

California Bookstore Day Returning; NCIBA Offers   To Help Other Indies Create Celebrations
Year Two of California Bookstore Day will take place on May 2, 2015, and it may be joined by similar celebrations in independent bookstores in other parts of the country. Thanks to a groundswell of interest from indies outside California, NCIBA has agreed to help facilitate bookstore day efforts with other regional associations, who are currently identifying interested stores in their region.

NCIBA will again work with publishers to create special, one-of-a-kind items for the day, and we will also solicit and coordinate all out-of-state orders. Those bookstores will be asked to sign off on California Bookstore Day "rules of the road", and NCIBA will provide a tip sheet of ideas for successful events and activities for the celebration. The ABA has pledged financial support to contribute to the extra costs being incurred by our 'California and Beyond' outreach.

This would not be a national bookstore day per se, but there would be many more indies involved. If there are enough stores in a given state or region, California Bookstore Day could be joined by New England Bookstore Day or Colorado Bookstore Day, but individual stores can also throw their own party and proclaim it their own independent bookstore day.

We'll keep you posted as developments unfold. In the meantime, get ready for new CBD tote bags, t-shirts, and perhaps other merchandise - we're already hard at work!

Members of the ABA should make sure they are taking advantage of the ABA forums: http://www.bookweb.org/forums. I often use the "Ask IndieCommerce" forum to get answers to my questions about using and developing the IndieCommerce platform - sometimes I find the answers to my questions already available and if I have a question that I can't find the answer to, it's highly likely that other stores will be interested as well.

I'm also a big fan of the Bookseller-to-Bookseller forum as a place to ask questions and discuss ideas. It helps me with big picture thinking, gives me ideas for our store, and provides a kind of "support group" at times. I recommend using the "subscribe" feature for the boards you are interested in; then the posts just show up in your email inbox and you can go log in if there's something you want to comment on. If you are an ABA member and don't have an account, you can create one using your store's ABA ID number.

NCIBA Loses Another Family Member

Bay Area sales rep Dan Skaggs passed away June 6th after a two-year battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Dan was a buyer at Books Inc. in Palo Alto, worked with the Bay Area wholesaler L-S Distributors, became a sales rep for Penguin, and for the last twenty years had been a sales rep with independent commission rep group Wilcher Associates. He also served on the NCIBA board of directors for 4 years.

Dan is remembered for his giant and loving heart, his fervor for a good book, and his generosity of spirit toward anyone who came into his orbit. He will be greatly missed.

VIA Magazine: Your Favorite Bookstore?
A tip of the hat to AAA, which in the July/August edition of its VIA travel magazine (page 8), asks readers to cheerlead for their favorite bookstore thusly:

"Know a neighborhood bookstore that never fails to send you home with a stack of intriguing titles? Email us at otr@viamagazine.com. We'll send you $25 if we quote you."

New Bookseller Job Board
Last month, we noted that Paz and Associates were creating a national Job Board for bookstore employees. Here's an update on the now up-and-running service.

Bookstore employees looking for open positions in management, buying, events and marketing, and senior positions on the sales floor are now able to find opportunities on the new Job Board at PazBookBiz.com. Current listings include management positions for author Jeff Kinney's new bookstore and for a start-up in the Pacific Northwest.

"Although there are websites within the book industry that feature employment ads, most are geared towards publishing or are subscription-based with limited access. There has not been a dedicated, accessible source for employees to find opportunities to advance their careers in retail bookselling," explains Donna Paz Kaufman, partner in The Bookstore Training Group of Paz & Associates. "We hope to facilitate these connections between jobs and qualified candidates with this free service," she added.

Bookstore owners are invited to submit postings for senior and management level positions including store manager, sales floor manager, events coordinator, marketing manager, buyer, and senior bookseller. The site was not intended for entry-level recruiting. Booksellers seeking senior level positions are invited to submit a posting to the Job Board as well. Both owners and booksellers are welcome to use the contact form at PazBookBiz.com or email copy to dpaz@pazbookbiz.com

Join the Publisher Promotion Offer Program
The New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association (NAIBA) and NCIBA are inviting bookstores from all regions of the country to take advantage of a new program that aims to make booksellers' weekly ordering more efficient and profitable. Booksellers who sign up for the NAIBA Promotion Offer Program through NCIBA (just send a note to hut@nciba.com) will receive an Excel document via e-mail every Monday morning listing current publisher promotions. The e-mail will feature upcoming and ongoing promotions that affect ordering and potential sales.

Publishers can submit their promotions on Wednesdays via a Google Docs form.

"This is another example of how a common problem faced by booksellers was solved simply because a bookseller was at a meeting and mentioned their wish for some industry efficiencies," said NAIBA Executive Director Eileen Dengler. "NAIBA did it last year with the Publishers Advocate program (where booksellers receive marked-up Edelweiss catalogs) and now the Publishers Offer Program. It demonstrates the value of our trade associations and what we do to help our members."
