California Bookstore Day Order Deadline Monday!
| |
For any bookstore wishing to sell California Bookstore Day limited-edition items and that has not yet sent in their order, we need to receive that order by Monday, December 2 - either online or by fax to the NCIBA office (415-561-7685). If you fail to place your order, you can still celebrate California Bookstore Day and be listed as a participant on the CBD website - you just won't have any of the only-for-CBD books and gifts to sell. The reason for this deadline is simple - we have to give print run numbers to participating publishers in early December in order to ensure everything will be produced in time for the event. We want as many bookstores as possible involved, but we can't extend our deadlines and risk production delays. If you want to confirm that we've received your order, just email hut@nciba.com and we'll let you know.

Just Announced - CBD Drop-In Items from McSweeney's!
| |
Thanks to Dave Eggers and our friends at McSweeney's, we have two additional California Bookstore Day items to offer bookstores. We are creating a supplemental catalog and order form, which will be emailed to all stores within the first few days of December. Deadline for the orders will be December 10.
Here's a description of the two items:
A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius Tote Bag: Dave Eggers has given permission to Litographs to print the entire text of Egger's seminal memoir on a tote bag in a gorgeous, modern design inspired by the book and available only for California Bookstore Day. Many of you admired Litographs' work at the NCIBA trade show - for Eggers fans, this will be a collectors item for sure. NOTE: There will only be 500 of these made. If orders total more than 500, stores will receive a percentage of their original request. Stores will only be charged for items they actually receive. [Specs: Tote bags are highly water-resistant and include a five-inch inner pocket; 17"w x 14.75"h, with a 9" hanging strap and flat bottom.] Retail Price: $29
Bookstories: A Collection This unique book package will feature new contributions from the California section of the McSweeney's stable of poets and writers, neatly bound in an accordion book. Writers - including Ishmael Reed, Lawrence Weschler, Matthew Zapruder, Jesse Nathan, Jim Ruland and others - explore through short pieces the best bookstore they know of that doesn't exist. (A bookstore on a boat? Why, yes! A bookstore in which the books grow like fruit and flowers on a single, riotous, store-encircling vine? Okay!) As a whole, the collection celebrates the idiosyncratic, joy-and-dream-inducing potential that is the independent bookstore. And what's more, this accordion book is unbindable: when its binding is loosed, the pages unfold to reveal a hidden, multi-panel illustration inspired by the California landscape, from Calexico to Copco. Retail Price: $30
OTHER NEWS * As we noted in earlier correspondence, the Curious George print has been removed from California Bookstore Day due to rights and licensing issues. We looked into having the print available as a giveaway, but ran into similar issues. All orders for this item have been canceled - bookstores need to do nothing.
* Wendy McNaughton's journal is titled Punk Rock Writer's Journal and contains watercolor portraits of famous 19th and 20st-century authors-Morrison, Hughes, Twain, Woolf, Stein and more-as punk rock rebels. We'll be sharing some sample illustrations soon - they're great!

Holiday Catalog Hits the Streets, and Bookstores
| |
According to several happy booksellers, this year's NCIBA book catalog is already driving customers to independent bookstores. The catalog was inserted in all subscriber copies of both the San Francisco Chronicle and the San Jose Mercury News and was imprinted and distributed by 40 member stores. Additional copies were inserted in the East Bay Express, Metro, Pacific Sun, and more than a dozen other newspapers throughout the region. The12-page, full color piece features more than 100 titles and includes three full pages of children's books. Unfortunately, one title that is not in the catalog is The Vatican: All the Paintings - The Complete Collection of Old Masters, Plus More Than 300 Sculptures, Maps, Tapestries, and Other Artifacts by Ankje Grebe ($75) published by Black Dog & Leventhal - 9781579129439. The volume was a late addition to the catalog but was inadvertently left out of the final version. However, since the publisher is promoting the book, we wanted booksellers to be aware of the title and Black Dog & Leventhal's excitement about it.

Teicher, ABA Board Named 'Person of the Year'
|
| Publishers Weekly announced today that American Booksellers Association CEO Oren Teicher and the ABA Board have been chosen as PW's Person of the Year for 2013.
In writing
 |
Indie booksellers' best friend. Photo by Leslie Jean-Bart
| about the award, the magazine noted that while "the independent bookselling community has been counted out more than once over the last three decades" in the face of superstores, online retailing, and e-books,by 2013 the indie channel had recovered and "independent bookstores are once again seen as critical to the success of the book industry."
Regarding the selection of Teicher and the ABA Board, PW Co-editorial Director Jim Milliot said, "It was clear from discussions with the editorial team that the role independent booksellers are playing in keeping print books a viable business needed to be recognized in 2013, and with the leadership Oren and the ABA Board has provided it became an easy choice."

Bookshelf Asks Its Truckee Community For Support
|
|
A recent story in the Tahoe Daily Tribune chronicled the struggles of longtime NCIBA member, the Bookshelf in Truckee. According to owner Debbie Lane, a move to a new location Westgate Shopping Center earlier this year did not have the desired effect, as sales haved dropped between 25 and 30%.
"We've been down so much," Lane said. "We just need people to get in the store and shop."
The Tribune article noted that a 10th-grade English class at Truckee High School was helping that effort - "As part of a class assignment, students are hosting a community rally on Saturday, Nov. 23, to encourage people to buy a book." We contacted Debbie to ask how the school effort wen and how things were going in general. Here's her report: The 10th grade English classes at Truckee High heard about our financial situation and took us on as part of their community service project. The big rally day was Saturday, and it was a great day. A super Black Saturday - record sales for the last five years in one day. We had so many comments from people who heard from the kids, or the newspaper article in the Wednesday paper (we were on the cover), they want their community bookstore. They can't imagine Truckee without us. People didn't know we had moved, or called from the old location, or their kids made them come in -- it was so gratifying. And sales have been up and equal to last years at this time. Our fundraising, on-line, has launched, and we have raised over $4,000 and hopefully, we continue to spread the word. Here's the link: I'm fairly optimistic, but the next step is to get a part-time manager and social media, event person to help keep our community involved. That's one of our big reasons for fundraising.

Modern Times Launches Indiegogo Campaign
| |
Modern Times, the iconic progressive bookstore in San Francisco, is the latest to turn to crowdfunding for financial support. The store just launched its own Indiegogo campaign, seeking tor raise $60,000. Here's their pitch on the Indiegogo site:
A San Francisco literary treasure, Modern Times Bookstore is preparing to step into a new era of progressive politics and radical activism. For over forty years (more than 32 of which we've spent in the vibrant Mission District), Modern Times has served San Francisco's progressive community. It is one of the oldest collectively run bookstores in the country, and has long been an important meeting spot for activists, book lovers, Mission locals, and visitors from the world over.
For many decades, Modern Times was a fixture on Valencia Street, but over the past five years, rent in that area has increased so drastically that Modern Times was long forced to operate at a loss. Two years ago, when Modern Times's lease ended, rent was hiked so steeply that the doors could not stay open. Modern Times was forced to move to another part of the Mission on 24th Street. Grappling with the immense financial hardships of relocating into a smaller venue with less foot traffic, Modern Times has been accruing debt and has continued operating at a loss.
Modern Times is an amazing and important resource for the city, and if it closes, not only is a bookstore lost, but so is a part of the community, and a piece of San Francisco's heritage. That's why Modern Times is now launching a campaign to pay down the debt and bolster the future of the store. With your support, Modern Times can realize a vision of sustainability and really make its location on 24th Street into a home.

Poster Reminds Customers That Books Make Great Gifts All Year Round
| |
The NCIBA has done a new color printing of its poster touting books as gifts that's available free to any interested bookstore member. The message is simple - books make great gifts for any person and any occasion; to date, more than 75 stores have requested and received posters.
The impetus for the poster's creation came from the notion that, although book buyers may spend less on themselves in tough times, they will usually not shirk on spending when purchasing a gift. So why promote books as great gift ideas only during the holiday season? Book customers purchase gifts all year round, so let's remind them that books are the perfect answer. The poster, measuring 11x17 and printed on card stock, can be ordered for free by emailing hut@nciba.com. Or use the concept to create your own messaging and let us know what you come up with.
