Now Available!
We're in the process of mailing copies of our Trade Show Attendee to members, but you can access it right now on our website, or you can to go to a pdf that includes a full schedule of events and registration form by

If you'd like to register online, this link takes you to a interactive pdf that you can fill in online. Be sure to save/print a copy for yourself before clicking the "submit your registration form" button.

A few updates and reminders:

* For those of you planning overnight stays, the deadline to reserve rooms at host hotel, Best Western Plus Grosvenor, at the NCIBA rate of $119 is September 10. After that date, the rate will go up, probably significantly, so book now. Call the hotel at 650-873-3200 or 1-800-722-7141, and ask for NCIBA block. There are also many other hotel options in the area; click here to access a list. The hotel is a block away and offers free parking during the day.

* We just added Hannah Kent to our Author Brunch on Friday, October 4. Hannah is the author of Burial Rites, one of the "Indies Introduce...Debut Authors, Fall 2013" picks. She joins Kim Stanley Robinson, Ivan Doig, and Wally Lamb.

* We will be running a shuttle service between the San Bruno BART station and the Conference Center on both Thursday and Friday, We are looking to have a 15-seat van drive in a loop between 8:30am and 7:30pm that will ensure no more than a 15-20-minute wait. We're working with the shuttle company and looking at the BART schedule for the San Bruno station and will announce final details via email and post on our website soon. But it's happening, so please share the news with your staff.

To help you orient yourself, here's a map of the station. The shuttle will be parked somewhere near the area of Kiss & Ride and Taxis. The road to the left of Tanforan Shopping Center is El Camino Real; the road intersecting Forest Lane Park is highway 380, which connect 280 and 101. The shuttle will hop onto 380, exit onto South Airport Blvd. and drive about a mile to the Conference Center - I drove it recently in seven minutes.

* The trade show exhibitor floor is sold out. We are adding a few tables in the south hallway - for those of you who attended last year, that's where we had the cocktail party for Amy Stewart and the area you pass though to get to the Oyster Point room where our meal events are held. Please makes sure to visit those 'overflow' exhibitors when you're at the show.

California Bookstore Day: Big News at Trade Show

There has been a flurry of activity surrounding California Bookstore Day (CBD) in the past month, as publishers and authors have been stepping up with ideas for limited edition word-based items to be produced exclusively for CBD. We will have a first "reveal" of some of these exclusive items at the trade show, both at our Membership Meeting on Thursday, October 3 (9:30am in Baden Room B) and throughout the show at our CBD table in the Registration area. Trust me, there is going to be some very cool stuff produced!

Also, although we fell short of our fundraising goal on Indiegogo, we did raise over $12,500, which is more than enough to keep things moving forward while we continue to explore additional fundraising options. Bottom line - California Bookstore Day is a go.

At the trade show, we'll be showing off our new CBD decals (see below - they look great on cars!) and book bags. We'll be offering them for sale to all attendees, and we'll have a special offer for any bookstore interested in purchasing the book bags (minimum quantity 20) for resale.

NCIBA Holiday Catalog Ready to Order
Order Free Copies Now!
5,000 + Gets You a Free Imprint and Inside Cover Letter to Your Customers

Last year, 43 NCIBA member stores ordered catalogs complete with their store's  imprint, in quantities from 5,000 to 50,000, and all for free.

Many stores insert their personalized catalogs in a local city, town, or neighborhood newspaper. Insert rates for such newspapers are about $50 a thousand, so the total cost to order, imprint, ship and distribute 5,000 copies would be around $250. And we ship your copies directly to the newspaper or its printer, free of charge.

As a bonus, we offer you space on page two to write a personal message to your customers. This has been a real plus for stores that have taken  advantage of this opportunity.

This year's full color, professionally designed catalog is 12 pages and features over 100 titles, including Children's books.  The striking cover is designed to be non-holiday specific to give the catalog a shelf life for the holidays and into January. You can click here for a title list.

Catalogs are shipped for arrival on or around November 10. See the next page for ordering information.  If you want to use the same imprint as last year, we have your artwork on file.

Deadline for orders and any new artwork is September 16, so don't delay. You can email us your order information or download the order form and view a list of titles here.

Sell More Books To Your Customers with Hut's Place
Take a look at the latest issue of Hut's Place, the weekly newsletter column dedicated to driving book buyers into bookstores with news of popular new releases, new titles on bestseller lists, hot books arriving in paperback, and more.

Here's an article from a recent column:

Great New Memoirs in Paperback
Land on Bestseller List

Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison
by Piper Kerman. You'll be hearing more about this book now that's been made into a Neflix original series. It's the incredible story of Kerman's 15-month stint in the orangeinfamous federal correctional facility in Danbury, Connecticut, after being convicted of a drug crime she had committed 10 years earlier.

The well-heeled Smith College alumna becomes inmate #11187-424 - one of the millions of people who disappear "down the rabbit hole" of the American penal system. From her first strip search to her final release, Kerman learns to navigate this strange world with its strictly enforced codes of behavior and arbitrary rules. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with small tokens of generosity, hard words of wisdom, and simple acts of acceptance. Heartbreaking, hilarious, and at times enraging, Kerman's story offers a rare look into the lives of women in prison - why it is we lock so many away and what happens to them when they're there.

Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Cahalan. Another harrowing ordeal, this one quite possibly worse than a year in the slammer. When 24-year-old journalist Cahalan woke up alone in a hospital room, strapped to her bed and unable to move or speak, she had no memory  of how she d gotten there. Days
earlier, she had been on the threshold of a new, adult life: at the beginning of her first serious relationship and a promising career at a major New York newspaper. Now she was labeled violent, psychotic, a flight risk. What happened?

It turns out Cahalan had a rare autoimmune disorder that was causing her to literally lose her mind. In addition to violent seizures, she was wracked by terrifying hallucinations, intense mood swings, insomnia, and fierce paranoia. Cahalan spent a month in the hospital, barely recognizable to her friends and family, before doctors diagnosed her. "Her brain is on fire," one doctor tells her family. "Her brain is under attack by her own body."

Cahalan, who has since recovered, remembers almost nothing about her month-long hospitalization. But ever the reporter, she reconstructs - through hospital security videotapes and interviews with her friends, family and the doctors who finally managed to save her life - her hellish experience as a victim of anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. The result is a kind of anti-memoir, an out-of-body personal account of a young woman's fight to survive one of the cruelest diseases imaginable. And, as with Orange Is the New Black, this is a story that ultimately has a happy ending.

Waging Heavy Peace by Neil Young. For a more relaxing, trip-down-memory-lane autobiography, you could do worse than mellow out in your old tie-dye t-shirt with legendary singer and songwriter Neil Young. He ambles amiably through his life - from his Canadian childhood, to his part in the Sixties rock explosion with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, through his later career with Crazy Horse and numerous private challenges. His is not a titillating, let's-trash-others memoir; it's more like a stream-of-consciousness conversation and self-appraising journal. But for a generation rooted in the era of rock-and-roll, his memories are the stuff of legends and a gas to read.

If you forward Hut's Place to a few good customers (or family and friends) with an invitation to subscribe, they'll buy the books from you when they read about something they want - a win-win, right?

Poster Reminds Customers That Books Make Great Gifts All Year Round

The NCIBA has done a new color printing of its poster touting books as gifts that's available free to any interested bookstore member. The message is simple - books make great gifts for any person and any occasion; to date, more than 75 stores have requested and received posters.

The impetus for the poster's creation came from the notion that, although book buyers may spend less on themselves in tough times, they will usually not shirk on spending when purchasing a gift. So why promote books as great gift ideas only during the holiday season? Book customers purchase gifts all year round, so let's remind them that books are the perfect answer.

The poster, measuring 11x17 and printed on card stock, can be ordered for free by emailing hut@nciba.com. Or use the concept to create your own messaging and let us know what you come up with.
