Trade Show Authors - What a Lineup!
| |
We have four outstanding author events this year, representing a wide range of genres and writers new and old. Here's a quick overview, which includes the final list of 31 Author Reception participants.
The AUTHOR BREAKFAST ON FRIDAY (8-10am, $30 includes signed books) features three women who have written three very different pieces of fiction. Worth getting up early for? We'll let you decide:
Lisa Genova's Love Anthony, in which an autistic child is a key character, has received some terrific reviews, including this from Heidi W. Durrow, author of The Girl Who Fell from the Sky: "Love Anthony broke my heart in the best way! I read it spellbound and breathless. If you don't know Lisa Genova's work already, meet your new favorite writer, storyteller, enchanter."
Rhoda Janzen proved you can write about faith and religion and still get lots of laughs in Mennonite in a Little Black Dress. Her new book, Does This Church Make Me Look Fat?, chronicles her ongoing search for spiritual enlightenment while dealing with a new relationship and a bout with breast cancer. Tough subjects, but all tackled frankly and with a large, often sidesplitting, dose of humor.
Whitney Otto's new book, Eight Girls Taking Pictures, is an absorbing work of biographical fiction that reimagines the lives of eight famous female photographers of the 20th century. It's an affecting meditation on the conflicts women face and the choices they make. As these eight seek extraordinary lives through their work, they also find meaning and reward in motherhood, marriage, and domesticity.
The AUTHOR BUZZ LUNCH ON THURSDAY (12:15-1:30pm, $20 includes galleys) includes a buffet lunch and seven authors discussing their new books, all due in the early part of 2013. These are all titles that their publishers are excited about, so it's a great chance to discover titles that may well be bestsellers in your store. Our author guests: Charles Dubow, Indiscretion, Morrow Kristopher Jansma, The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards, Viking Anthony Marra, A Constellation of Vital Phenomena, Crown Joshua Mohr, Fight Song, Soft Skull Cristina Schwarz, The Edge of the Earth, Atria Kevin Smokler, Practical Classics: 50 Reasons to Reread 50 Books You Haven't Touched Since High School, Prometheus Jaimal Yogis, The Fear Project, Rodale
What can we say about the CHILDREN'S AUTHOR TEA ON THURSDAY (4-5:30pm, $25 includes signed books), except that it may be the hottest ticket at the show? It's not often that you can present four 'headliners' at one event, but that's what we've got here with (alphabetically) Ally Condie (Reached), Daniel Handler/Lemony Snicket (Who Could that Be at This Hour?), Jon Klassen (This Is Not My Hat), and Maggie Stiefvater (The Raven Boys). Both Condie and Klassen will have power point presentations to complement their talks, and we'll have tea sandwiches scones, cookies, and both hot and iced tea.
And what better way to wrap up the show than with our annual AUTHOR RECEPTION ON FRIDAY (6-7:30pm, books and galleys galore, free food & drink). We'll have 32 authors (City of Dark Magic 'author' Magus Flyte is actually a writing duo), a mix adult and children's, on hand to meet, greet, and sign books; the complete list is below. Since we sent out the attendee packet with the schedule, we've had a couple of changes to the Reception lineup - Robin Sloan cancelled, but we added two children's authors, John Stephens and Newbery winner Rebecca Stead. Bring a bag!
David Abrams, Fobbit, Grove/Atlantic Randy Alfred, Mad Science, Little, Brown Jeff Backhaus, Hikikomori and the Rental Sister, Algonquin Greg Bardsley, Cash Out, Harper Perennial Kendare Blake, Girl of Nightmares, Tor Teen Stacy Carlson, Among the Wonderful, Steerforth Gail Carriger, Etiquette & Espionage, Little, Brown Magus Flyte, City of Dark Magic, Penguin Michelle Gagnon, Don't Turn Around, HarperCollins Scott Hutchins, A Working Theory of Love, Penguin Mike Jung, Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identities, Arthur Levine Richard Kadrey, Devil Said Bang, Morrow Stefan Kiesbye, Your House Is on Fire, Your Children All Gone, Penguin Jeff Mack, Good News, Bad News, Chronicle Gianna Marino, Too Tall Houses, Viking Robin Maxwell, Jane: The Woman Who Loved Tarzan, Tor Shannon Messenger, Keeper of the Lost Cities, S&S Lisa McMann, The Island of Silence, S&S Marissa Moss, Mira's Diary: Lost in Paris, Sourcebooks Amy Novesky, Imogen, Cameron+Co. Watch Our Videos of New Trade Show Venue
| | With the NCIBA trade show just around the corner, we thought you might like to actually see where we're going to be. These five short videos aren't high art (I know, don't give up my day job), but they do provide a brief overview of the conference center, both outside and in - a sense of place, if you will. The videos are also on our website.

Eat Read Give Catalog: Two Titles Out, Two Titles In
| |
Two books scheduled to appear in the Eat Read Give catalog coming in November - Beyond the Pale and Downton Abbey Script Book - have had their publishing dates postponed to 2013, so they have been removed and replaced by two new titles.
Substituting for Beyond the Pale is Chocolate Passion: Recipes and Inspirations from the Kitchens of Chocolatier Magazine by Tish Boyle and Timothy Moriarty (John Wiley & Sons), $24.99.
Replacing Downton Abbey is Talking Pictures: Images and Messages Rescued from the Past by Ransom Riggs (It Books) $16.99.

Wi8 begins with a reception on Friday evening, February 22, 2013, at Kansas City, Missouri's historic Union Station and continues through Monday, February 25, with more than 25 education sessions for booksellers at all levels of experience. The educational programming and author events will be at the 2013 host hotel, the Westin Kansas City at Crown Center. The three-day education program, which is made possible by the generous support of the Ingram Content Group, covers a wide range of topics, including buying and selling non-book, working with self-published authors, the ABA/Kobo eBook solution, remainder buying, effective and profitable marketing, financial operations, and more.
The schedule also features plenaries with bestselling authors Malcolm Gladwell and Daniel Pink, peer advisory groups, reps' picks lunches, publisher meetings, and special events, including the ever-popular Author Reception.
Kansas City will also be the site of the National Association of College Stores' (NACS) 2013 CAMEX trade show, and Wi8 will feature a special trip to the show for bookseller attendees, where they will be introduced to a diverse mix of gift and non-book items. As part of the ABA/NACS cooperation, booksellers who take the field trip during Wi8, or visit CAMEX on their own following the institute, will receive a $100 rebate for placing an order of any size from a vendor exhibiting at the show.
Registration for Wi8 is open exclusively to ABA bookstore and provisional members and is capped at 500 booksellers with a maximum of three registrants per member business to ensure a dynamic yet intimate educational program. Past Winter Institutes have filled up quickly, so ABA is encouraging members who want to attend to register as soon as possible.

Bookselling This Week
Thanks for Shopping Indie, the first-ever multi-publisher promotion exclusively for ABA member bookstores, announced earlier this month, will give booksellers the opportunity to offer an "extra" to customers on a broad range of 2012 Indie Next List titles. The promotion starts on November 24, Small Business Saturday, but to take part stores must sign up by October 22.
A key element of the promotion is that stores mount a "Thanks for Shopping Indie" front-of-store display featuring promo titles and specially designed downloadable POP, from November 24, 2012 through at least December 1, 2012. Booksellers must also agree to promote Thanks for Shopping Indie in store newsletters, through social media, as staff picks, and the like.
Downloadable logos, table display cards, web banners, and posters are available in the Bookseller DIY. Booksellers with suggestions and ideas regarding Thanks for Shopping Indie promotional materials are encouraged to contact ABA Marketing Manager and Designer Greg Galloway - greg@bookweb.org. Complete "Thanks for Shopping Indie" details, including a sign-up form and the list of eligible titles, are available on BookWeb.org. Booksellers can also learn more by stopping by the ABA booth at the NCIBA trade show.

Kobo Launch Incentive Deadline October 20
| |
The Kobo eBook and eReader program is off to a swift start, with many ABA member stores already expressing formal interest in joining the program. To answer booksellers' questions and to facilitate sign-up, the American Booksellers Association has set up a Kobo resource page on BookWeb.org, and Kobo and Ingram representatives will be present at the NCIBA trade show.
Booksellers should be mindful, however, that to participate in the Launch Incentive - which includes free displays, free demo units, sell-through bonuses, product returnability, extended dating, and a cash bonus for participating - they must sign up by Saturday, October 20.
Stores can begin the sign-up process on the Kobo resource page, where they'll also find up-to-date program details, device images and specs, web graphics, and more.
The first step in the sign-up process is a form called Participate in the ABA/Kobo eReading Program. This is intended to measure ABA member interest only and is not a commitment. Form submissions will help ABA plan while booksellers take time to more closely read Step 2, the "Kobo Participation Agreement." It is necessary, however, that the Participation Agreement be completed in full in order to participate in the program and take advantage of the Launch Incentive.
To finalize participation in the Kobo program, stores will need to sign a Kobo brand usage agreement and send their store logo to ABA. The brand usage agreement from Kobo will be posted and sent to stores soon.
Members with questions about the ABA/Kobo partnership should contact their Member Relationship Manager or send an e-mail to kobo@bookweb.org.
