-------
The Buddy Holly story is, by definition, peopled by musicians. The show is really the original actor/musician musical. The BDT Stage production will be adapted to the specific talents of the company and the requirements of our specific production...and in some ways, the casting will develop as we see the unique talents of the actors we are presented with. EVERYONE WILL NOT NECESSARILY HAVE TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT. ACTOR/SINGER/DANCERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO AUDITION. Some things, however, are certain. Buddy Holly and The Crickets (Buddy, Joe and Jerry) must be able to play their instruments. There will be an orchestra involved with our production, but there will be significant portions of the show that depend on the musical ability of these actors. Additionally, Vi Petty is scripted to play piano and celeste. Although we can work around this some, the actress must at the very least be comfortable and believable at the keyboard. The portrayal of the male performers at the Apollo would be greatly enhanced by the ability to play an instrument.
Although, the above are the strict requirements of the script, we are absolutely looking for actors who can play a musical instrument. The final concert section of the show is fully scored for brass, reeds, guitars, violin, bass, drums, and keyboards. There is also a solo fiddle section in the opening number that would be great to include. So...if you play an instrument, please look at the material provided and come to the "musician audition" and play it...or, even better, play something you have prepared. For the actors interested in roles of Joe and Jerry, there will be instruments available to play at the audition (Upright Bass and Drum Kit), and there are bound to be a couple of guitars hanging around, and of course there is a keyboard at the theatre as well. All other musicians will need to bring their own instrument.
Everyone in the show sings. In addition to the obvious soloists, there are ensemble/backing vocals everywhere, and some feature vocal spots (Rose of Texas, Why Do Fools Fall In Love?, and the Radio Jingle). For the characters of
Joe and Jerry, you must be able to sing the backing vocals while playing your instrument (and you will need to do this very thing at the auditions).
Auditionees for the named roles should look at the sides provided for scene work, and obviously, any solo material associated with the role. The people interested in ensemble only should prepare 32 bars of something relevant (from the period, can be from the show or not, in the style, etc.) and be prepared to dance. If you are interested in a named role that doesn't have a solo, you should have a little something to sing for us as well.
All auditions are held at BDT Stage, 5501 Arapahoe Avenue, Boulder, CO, 80303.
