Daily Words From Dad

"Good day to you! They say a clear conscience is a soft pillow. And without a doubt a soft pillow is much easier to sleep on throughout the night then something hard that your head is lying upon. Today we are going to talk about that place that rarely shuts up to most people, this of course is the conscience. A conscience is like a baby. It has to go to sleep before you can. Too many people have done things in their life that they never seem to get resolved and therefore it grinds them to powder within their thought life. It's the replaying of something over and over again in your mind that you did or something you spoke. It's been said, that a conscience is the dog that can't bite, but boy how it never stops barking. I think that pretty much says it all. I wonder how much sleep deprivation is due to a guilty conscience?

There is another side to our conscience which serves us well. It's when we fill it with what's right and then govern with that good and proper information from our heart because we believe in it and want to be like it. But if we don't follow that good conscience, it will haunt us with great misery if we betray what we knew was the right thing to do. Many Christians serve God poorly with this kind of spoiled conscience. 'While a conscience is our friend, all is at peace; however once it is offended, farewell to a tranquil mind.' -Lady Mary Wortley Montagu. Our minds when offended can turn on us like rabid dog. Its comparable to being in a court of law when our conscience is without God. We just stand there in the cold and plain courtroom with just ourselves, and without a judge in sight who could pardon us or sentence us and get this torment over. It's that nagging conscience that reminds you of a mother-in-law whose visit never ends.

This talk today regarding the conscience has so many facets to it, that I can't possibly cover it all. For instance: It bears heavily upon the thoughts of any of us if we have violated something that we know is wholesome. It can be such a good friend that keeps you steered from trouble; or it can be like Dr. Jackal & Hyde, one moment its kind and the next moment its flipping out and condemning anything in sight...in this mode its revealing the ugliness inside of that person. Another aspect to this is one should be more concerned about what their conscience whispers to them inwardly than what other people may be shouting outwardly. The conscience also can be a trickster. How so you may ask? Because the conscience is that inner voice which warns us that someone may be watching.

So we play-act to impress or deflect them from seeing what we really did or said; and unfortunately, we do this with lies portraying who we're not, while hiding what is buried deep within our conscience so as to blend in without them suspecting a thing. The thing is, you're living a lie if you're doing this, and you will never enter into a true rest of the soul no matter how well you disguise it. Why? Because it will go home with you every night and scream at you until day-break. The fatigue of getting no peaceful sleep will finally take its toll. Don't live your life like this. Be true to yourself, to God, and to others. Learn to forgive yourself, and others. Forgiveness is the only remedy for a bad conscience." ~Dad~
