Electricity Remains a Good Value

In today's world, you won't find many items that cost less than $5. You can purchase a gallon of milk, a gallon of gas or a Big Mac® meal from McDonald's. But did you know that an average day's worth of electricity costs less than $5?

Even in our country's shifting energy climate, electricity remains a good value. In fact, electricity has the lowest cost per day of any of the items listed above. And not all of those items are necessary for daily life!

Envirowatts
YOU Can Make a Difference

EnviroWatts is an earth-friendly way to support the use of renewable energy and promote research and development of new, renewable energy sources in Ohio.  With each 100-kilowatt hour block of EnviroWatts purchased, you can be assured 100 kilowatt hours of electricity were produced from renewable energy sources.  In addition, a portion of your purchase helps fund research and development of new such energy sources in Ohio.

It's also member-friendly.  Members can CHOOSE to pay the additional cost of renewable energy alternatives to fossil fuel-based generation sources.  It's easy to demonstrate concern for the environment and take action to make a difference.

Renewables are an important part of a diversified electric generation mix.  When used in conjunction with affordable, abundant coal and with natural gas, members enjoy reliable electricity and more stable costs.  EnviroWatts purchases make a positive impact on the environment without the expensive, only marginally effective proposed EPA regulations on coal-fired power plants.  Learn more in Ron Salyer's article in the September issue of Country Living Magazine.

Seal Cracks to Save Energy & Money

Finding and sealing air leaks can save you energy and money. Here's a tip that can help keep your home  warmer in winter and cooler in the summer while lowering your utility bills.

Caulk cracks and openings around your home. Find cracks by waiting for a windy day and then carefully holding a lit incense stick or a smoke pen next to your windows, doors, electrical outlets, and other spots where outside air may infiltrate. If the smoke stream moves horizontally, you've found a leak that needs to be sealed.

Experts recommend using waterproof, flexible, and long-lasting silicone caulk to seal cracks and gaps that are less than one-quarter-inch wide. Remove any old caulk and clean the surface before applying new caulk.  Fresh caulk takes several hours, or longer, to dry, so it's best to do the job on a dry day when humidity is relatively low and the temperature is above 45 degrees F. In addition to caulk, you can use low-expansion spray foam to seal leaks.
