Co-op Membership:  What's in it for Me?
Exploring the unique benefits of cooperative membership.
You set up your electric service account with Pioneer Electric Cooperative and you think to yourself, "That's done. Now I just have to pay my monthly bill." But the truth is we're more than just a utility provider you pay each month for electricity. We have more to offer - and we want you, our members, to know about these benefits.

There are more than 900 electric cooperatives in the U.S. serving 42 million members. Pioneer, your local electric cooperative, serves 16,700 with lines stretching across more than 2,600 of miles. So, what makes being a member of an electric cooperative unique?

We're all in this together. You are a member of Pioneer- not simply a customer. That means you have a voice when it comes to the way we do business. Each February, you have the option to vote for your board of trustees who are members just like you. These trustees make important decisions for our co-op, which is why members' voices must be heard. You can even consider running for the board yourself!

We're local. It's likely you know an employee of Pioneer. Our employees - your friends and neighbors - share the same concerns for our community that you do. Each year, we sponsor a variety of events and offer safety demonstrations, scholarships and contributions to various other community activities.

We're not-for-profit. Pioneer Electric Cooperative doesn't pay profits to investors; we return money over and above operating costs to you, our members, based on electricity consumption. Annually, electric co-ops nationwide return millions of dollars to members through this capital credits process. This year 20,299 current and former Pioneer members received over $2.2 million dollars (bringing the total refunded to more than $37 million) in the form of capital credits from the cooperative.

We're here for you.
At Pioneer our mission is to go beyond your expectations as we provide you with safe, high quality and responsive service at competitive prices. We care about our members' quality of life, which is why our employees are continuously finding innovative ways to improve our service. In the event of an outage, many times we are able to power your home from an alternate source on our system if the main path has a power interruption. We also have tools to help you view your energy use through SmartHub. Just create a login for SmartHub and you can view your energy data through My Energy Tracker. You can also pay your bill online securely from the comfort of your home ANYTIME with SmartHub. Pioneer offers energy audits and advice to help you find ways to make your family and your home more energy efficient. The Kill A Watt EZ is another tool available from either office or local libraries to help you monitor the electric use of items in your home.

These are just a few facts about what makes electric cooperatives unique. For more information about us and the services we offer, visit our webpage.

Tell EPA Ohio Can't Afford Higher Electric Bills
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed regulations to limit carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at existing power plants. The result could be more expensive electricity for Pioneer Electric Cooperative. This means less money in your pocket.

At Pioneer, we believe that relying on diverse fuel sources for electric generation is the best way to keep electric bills affordable. Whether our electricity is generated by coal, natural gas, wind, hydro or biodigester methane we take our responsibility seriously to provide reliable and affordable electricity while doing our best to protect the environment.

We care about the price of electricity because we're a not-for-profit electric co-op that looks out for our members and their checkbooks. We're concerned the EPA is making a decision that could force an increase in the cost of electricity and erode the reliability of our power supply.

What's at stake? If electricity prices rise, we're worried the trickle down effect could be severe. Higher electricity prices hurt us as consumers, but they also hurt businesses of all types, slow job growth, and potentially eliminate jobs.

That's why we're encouraging everyone to speak up. Visit  www.Action.coop and tell Washington, DC that we can't afford more regulations and higher electric bills. This will not just affect electric cooperative members, it will affect ALL individuals and businesses who use electricity regardless of  whether they get it from a cooperative, municipal or investor-owned. So ask your friends and family to send a comment, too. If they are not member of a cooperative, have them  visit www.tellEPA.com.
