                  | |   The Wilderness of Yoga
I used to lead trips in the wilderness. Facilitating yoga teacher trainings is not unlike leading those trips. A group of individuals gather for a common cause. These individuals become a community through the process of shared goals, teamwork, yogic practices, breathing and moving in unison, introspection and reflection, communication and conflict resolution.

The group becomes high functioning. It is able to accomplish tasks while involving all group members. As the group matures, I move from the front of the room, to the side of the room, and then to the back of the room, as I delegate and defer to the strengths and skills of others. The "Seat of the Teacher" then belongs to the community, and like musical chairs; we all take turns holding that seat according to our strengths and skill sets and the task at hand. The individuals gain proficiency in the skills and complete the course (graduate) to then offer their cultivated gifts and authentic voices back to their communities. Throughout each day of a training, and throughout the arc of the training, my leadership style changes constantly. Sometimes I am more directive in managing tasks; teaching a yoga class where the majority of my instructions are active commands (basically I tell people what to do--"step your right leg back three feet"). At other times, I am facilitating intrapersonal processes (contemplation, meditation, pranayama, mantra) and interpersonal communication (whole group discussion, small group discussion, small group exercises) and guiding a group through stages of development. Throughout I am using experiential education methods (learning by doing) to maximize participants engagement and learning; explain the exercise, model the exercise, facilitate small group hands-on practice, debrief the exercise and extrapolate the learning to a variety of contexts. "A leader is best when people barely know he exists...When his work is done, his aim fulfilled, the people will say, 'We did this ourselves." ~ Tao Te Ching

I no longer lead wilderness trips, except with my kids, because teaching yoga gives me the greatest diversity of teaching possibilities in both presentation/teaching modalities and range of content. I can think of no other teaching profession that would stimulate my own growth, or facilitate the growth of my students, as teaching yoga. In my Train the Trainer program (the last module of my 300 hour Teacher Training and in our Certification Program), I am able to teach a lot of these leadership/facilitation/experiential education methods more explicitly. I have found the path to which my gifts are best suited, and one in which I am in a continual process of my own learning and growth. Being a teacher means I am a perpetual student.    Parenting is a leadership process; sometimes we jump in and take charge, make the decisions and instruct the tasks. When it is a high-risk situation, this is warranted. At other times, when the stakes are lower, we all participate more equally in the decisions. Madeleine is thriving in first grade. She is empathetic, kind and considerate.

Oliver is in his second year of pre-school and loves the play based
learning methods. He is fun loving, impetuous and making great progress in self-regulation and articulation. Oliver often insists on picking out his own clothes, doing certain things by himself with no help, and doing it his way. In these instances, I am able to step back and observe and enjoy--even if it does make us a few minutes late to school.
I recently took them backpacking in Big Sur, CA. We hiked 2.5 miles downhill to camp out for two nights. They learned how to pack for a trip, set up a tent, cook on a backpacking stove, purify water and leave no trace camping practices. They both hiked 2.5 miles out, and it was uphill, on their own two feet. It is beautiful to watch their respective progression toward independence.
Marriage is a co-leadership/co-teacher kind of process and Tracy continues to be my heroine of heroines. She is the glue that holds our lives together. Her courage, strength and passion inspire me every day. Tracy continues to be one of my best teachers in every way. Without her, I would likely be an awful mess. We know each others' strengths and weaknesses pretty well by now, and we use our complimentary skill sets quite well--at least most of the time.

YOGAMAZÉ continues to grow steadily. Building community can be challenging.  Not everyone buys in to the bigger vision and people come and go in this village. I can only be at the front of the room so much of the time, and some new communities are very difficult to grow.  For example, our Los Angeles Studio is very slow growing compared to our training arm.  We recently launched a new fall schedule .  Check it out and take advantage of a plethora of opportunities for individualized attention. I recently entered my fifth decade. I don't really know yet what it means to be 40. Sometimes my inner 8 year old comes out. Some days I feel 18, and some I feel 80. Regardless, I certainly don't feel "grown up." I'm learning more every day, and some of my latest lessons have involved boundaries, communication and conflict resolution. I've long known that I am a conflict avoider, and I am making personal progress in facing that difficulty in relationships.  I am learning there is no avoiding what's really happening. I am also getting better at asking for help, which has never been a strength of mine. Being a "I'll do it myself" kind of guy, I am relieved when there is a team of folks ready to support me (Rocky, Paula, Stephanie, Nichol, Stacey and so many more).  At any rate, I have yet to find "transcendence" and continue to find myself a mere mortal in the face of challenges and wilderness.

I look forward to gaining further proficiency with all of you in the months and years to come.  Then together, we will offer our gifts and voices back, and pay it forward.Saprema, Noah
