Chalice Abbey
With a mission statement that includes being environmental stewards and observing practices that lead to a more equitable and sustainable world, it's easy to say that Chalice Abbey's Fair Trade Emporium has much deeper roots than a mere retail store.
A project of the Hi-Plains Area of the Christian Church, the Fair Trade Emporium is part of a self-sustaining experiment (along with its sister Center for Spirituality and the Arts) and is the only dedicated fair trade retailer within 400 miles of Amarillo. Their hope is to help bring education to those who would otherwise have none and alleviate poverty by purchasing fair trade items, many from Ten Thousand Villages. Each item has a history and a name behind it and manager, Paul Carruth is glad to tell the stories. Spending time meeting with then SBDC Consultant, Rick Palmer, the two looked at many possible locations and crunched the numbers associated with those locations before Paul made his decision. After many painstaking months of remodeling using reclaimed materials, the Fair Trade Emporium opened in April and the Center with its stunning vaulted ceilings and old-world feel, is set to open in May. Upcoming events include a Fair Trade Film Festival on May 11th and the much anticipated Conversations with Bishop John Shelby Spong on June 21st and 22nd. Chalice Abbey welcomes everyone and Paul is a welcoming host to all who browse the wares at the Fair Trade Emporium.
