Spirited Expressions

Bringing together good wine, good food and good friends is a surefire recipe for success.
Combining these things with her love of painting, Christian Bressler opened Spirited Expressions, a social painting party service, in September of 2012.

With a background in graphic design, Christian had the creativity and knowledge to know what she wanted to do and what her costs would be. Working with SBDC Senior Consultant, Julie Attebury, she was able to complete her plan and make sure that all of her start-up requirements were met.

Classes are offered most weeks and feature one painting per session and attendees are guided by their instructor to recreate it with their own personal flair. The online schedule indicates which painting is up for each session so that attendees can pick and choose sessions that matches their interests and decor. A fee of $35 includes all materials needed and attendees purchase food and drinks off of the venue's menu. Popular venues include Crush Wine Bar & Deli and Monday evenings at Fire Slice Pizzeria. These classes are NO SKILLS REQUIRED and Christian welcomes artists and non-artists alike! All attendees receive a punch card and after attending nine classes, the tenth is free.

In addition to her regularly scheduled sessions, Christian also offers private parties for both adults and children.

Tax Changes
Most of us are probably ready for a vacation from the term "fiscal cliff," but the deal struck as a result of congressional negotiations will impact every tax payer, not excluding small business owners, and is worthy of our attention. Here are a few highlights of the new bill:
  • Payroll tax increases from 4.2% to 6.2%. If you make Amarillo's median income of $35,000 per year, that's an additional $700 per year or $58 per month that you'll be paying. The employer match at 6.2% remains the same.
  • The 25%, 28%, 33% and 35% income tax brackets have been permanently extended for those with annual income below $400,000 (individual filers) and $450,000 (married filing jointly). For help with your filings as an employer, check out the IRS' latest copy of the 2013 Percentage Method Tables for Income Tax Withholding (PDF).
  • The New Markets Tax Credit program has been extended for two more years. This program allows for a 39% tax credit over 7 years for entities making a private investment in a business located in a low-income area.

There are many additional updates in this bill that affect student loan interest deductions, dependent care credit and adoption credits, just to name a few. Read more on Congressman Mac Thornberry's website at thornberry.house.gov.

Filing Your Small Business Taxes
With Christmas and New Years behind us that can only mean one thing....the not-so-jovial tax season is upon us. Whether this is your first time filing taxes as a small business owner or you're a seasoned filer and just want to brush up on new rules and publications, the IRS has a section of their website devoted totally to small business owners.

They provide info such as:

Check out the Small Business and Self-Employed Tax Center to find the most up-to-date answers to your tax questions.

Did you know...
Americans buy more than 65 million Poinsettias each year, the majority of those during the Christmas season. That's an almost $240 million retail economic boost to our economy.

If your home or office is anything like ours and many others, your Poinsettias were probably drooping quite ungracefully when you returned from vacation and you'll be boosting the economy again next year to replace them.
