November 2012

Jason Smith

We're happy to welcome Jason Smith as the newest employee at the WT SBDC!

Jason hails from Panhandle, TX and is a graduate of Texas Tech University with a B.B.A. in Management and Marketing. At the age of 22, when most of us were still trying to choose a career path, he bought Buffalo Grass Steakhouse in Panhandle. The restaurant was deep in the red when he purchased it, but in an almost unheard of short period of three months, he had the business back in the black and a Panhandle favorite. He continued running it successfully until selling it 2012 to pursue new opportunities.

Jason is now available for client appointments and although he specializes in restaurants, he's available for many other small business needs.

When not at the SBDC, Jason is an avid dirt bike rider and continues to be involved in farming in the Panhandle area. He reports that he's a good cook as well and judging by his success with Buffalo Grass, we'll take his word for it!

Did you know...
In 1876, Western Union was one of the largest and most technologically advanced communications companies in the world and held a monopoly in the telegraph industry. That same year, businessman Gardiner Hubbard approached Western Union and offered to sell the patent rights to a new communications device he'd helped fund. Western Union felt that the device was little more than a toy and not marketable and passed on the purchase.

Who was the inventor he'd helped fund? None other than Alexander Graham Bell and the "toy" that had been turned down was the telephone.
