GOING OUT WITH A BANG!
We are literally 'going out with a bang' as we head into the final days of our 2013-2014 school year.  Much is happening behind the temporary wall that was constructed over night - demolition has begun during the early morning hours in the library, Culpeper room and board room.  Stay tuned over the summer for updates and some 'sneak peaks' into what's changing at the school.

Emma Peller practices on the Psaltery.

Psalteries are pre-tuned string instruments that were used in the Middle Ages to accompany psalms.  Our "modern" psalteries have twenty two strings and a triangular shape so that we can use a bow.  We can also use a plectrum or our fingers to pluck the strings and therefore have a completely different sound.

At NEMJDS, Ms. Rottembourg introduced the psaltery and got an immediate enthusiastic response from all students.  They realized they could play it with a little practice, reading the music notes on the board, or just compose a simple melody.

During a dinner party with musicians and composers in Paris last July, Ms. Rottembourg said that she was using the psaltery in the classroom and was very pleased with the results.  Jokingly, she added that she was probably the only music teacher in North America to use psalteries in the classroom.  One of the guests corrected her: "You mean the only music teacher in the world!!"   According to Ms. Rottembourg, "The psaltery is one of the better pedagogic tools I've ever used.  Just looking at the faces of the students focusing on playing the right note and their smile when they show me the results is my best reward as a music teacher."

Thanks to the Abroms Fund for the Arts, NEMJDS was able to purchase four new psalteries for the school, and Mrs. Krell let us use one she had at home.

CHEMISTRY POEM CONTEST WINNER
For years, chemists have been promoting a better world through recyclable plastics, cleaner-burning fuels, phosphate-free detergents, environmental monitoring, and green chemistry initiatives. The American Chemical Society joined the Earth Day celebration (April 22nd) and holds an annual Chemists Celebrate Earth Day (CCED) event, highlighting one of four general topics (water, air, plants/soil or recycling).

For 2014, Alabama students from grades K-12 were invited to share their interpretation of this year's theme, "The Wonders of Water", in the form of illustrated poems.

We are incredibly proud to announce that Lillian McClure, 5th grader, won the CCED 2014 award for all of Alabama!  She was awarded a monetary prize and a certificate.  Mazel Tov Lillian!!
