AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR VISIT
Lori Nichols author illustrator
Lori Nichols, local author and illustrator.

All students at the Day School had the incredible honor of meeting local Homewood author and illustrator, Lori Nichols.  She just released her debut picture book Maplenow in stores nationwide.

Ms. Nichols taught the students about finding inspiration for stories and pictures in everyday events, nature, family and friends.  She showed the students an engaging and entertaining smartboard presentation depicting the evolution of the story and art for Maple.  The students were mesmerized by her creativity.  The highlight of the presentation was an interactive lesson on how to think 'out of the box' by creating student's names into artwork - only using the letters of their names.  It was fantastic!

We have the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of the book for $14.00.   Click here to print the order form and return it to the Day School with a check made out to NEMJDS. (NEMJDS does not benefit in any way from the sale of this book)

INSPIRING INTEGRATED LEARNING
Upper School learns from author Mona Golabek at Samford

Grades 6 and 7 students read the very moving book "The Children of Willesden Lane", by Mona Golabek.  They created ceramic artwork and wrote Hebrew commentary that reflected their reactions to this moving true story.  The learning culminated with a visit to Samford university, to watch the author present her book as a dramatic monologue with her own piano accompaniment. Our students were very attentive to this extremely moving and emotional program. Their creative work was displayed along with other Birmingham students' work.

Reading, discussing, writing about and creating for "The Children of Willesden Lane" was an across the curriculum, integrated project and team effort.
