LOVING MATH & SCIENCE
Students in all grades are celebrating the joy of hands-on learning in math and science.  Lessons have inspired creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving - key components to prepare our students for success in the 21st century global economy.
MENGER'S SPONGE
Have you heard of a Menger Sponge? No, it's not a high level cleaning tool but a visual mathematical concept. Upon completion it looks like a house-of-cards structure or an elaborate origami project. Our 3rd grade and Upper School  math students collaborated to create a Menger Sponge out of hundreds and hundreds of business cards.
Menger's Sponge
Jacob Elgavish and Lexi Rothenberg show off the Menger Sponge examples.

A Menger Sponge is a 3-dimensional creation that explains the concept of surface area increasing while volume is decreasing. This project is connected to the learning of "fractals" in geometry, exponential functions in algebra, and sequences in pre-algebra. It teaches surface area, volume, measurement and counting techniques. Student collaboration, problem solving and perseverance were essential skills needed in order to complete this project.

SCIENCE EXTRAVAGANZA

Research, develop and perform a series of science experiments in front of the entire school and guests?  No problem for our 7th grade students!

During the NEMJDS Grandparent/VIP Science Kabbalat Shabbat, Day School students were tantalized by a series of science experiments incorporated into an original narrative.  Students saw .....
  1. Bernoulli's Bazooka - a wind tunnel that represented Bernoulli's Principle: the relationship between the velocity and pressure exerted by a moving liquid.
  2. Nature Abhors a Vacuum - as oxygen levels are reduced in a closed space, a vacuum is created and an egg can be sucked through a very narrow opening.
  3. Sublime Sublimation - the creation of a never ending snake bubble using the principles of sublimation: transition of a substance directly from the solid to the gas phase without passing through an intermediate liquid phase.
  4. Elephant Toothpaste - a chemical reaction that uses yeast as a catalyst that speeds up the oxygen reaction and causes what looks like toothpaste to squeeze out of a container.
  5. Chemilluminescence - A glowing reaction by mixing a variety of common household items and Mountain Dew!
  6. Dragon Fire - ethenol evaporated in a bottle leaves an unstable alcholol vapor that ignites very quickly.

FRACTION OLYMPICS

Complete with opening and closing ceremonies, flags, training and hard work, N.E. Miles Jewish Day School hosted the Fraction Olympics for their 5th grade mathletes.  Four teams competed in a variety of math related fraction events, including 'Add 'em Up Challenge' (timed adding of random fractions), 'Mixed Number Race' (convert improper fractions to mixed numbers in their lowest terms), 'Fraction Card Race' (order fractions from smallest to largest - timed event) and 'Story Problems' (fraction story problems solved as a group).  Teams included:
Norway Numerators, Britain Halves, French Factors and Prime Europeans.  Congratulations to the medal winners and their incredibly creative math teacher, Ms. Gresham!

SOMETHING MENSCHENABLE

Omer Duvdevani, 3rd grade NEMJDS student, led his Mountain Brook basketball team to the finals, held last night at the Mountain Brook high school Spartan Arena.  Demonstrating an incredible act of community, Omer was supported by an enormous cheering section made up of his NEMJDS friends and classmates.  The entire NEMJDS school congratulates Omer and his team for reaching the finals and their second place finish overall in the league.
