STUDENT ARTWORK PART OF GLOBAL PROJECT
Thousands of 2' x 2' artworks from various regions of the world are being collected, including original works from students at NEMJDS, and will be connected side by side to warp the Saturn V Moon Rocket at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama.  To create the Dream Rocket Project, students were asked to expand beyond the present state of the world and imagine our future and their contribution to that future.  These individual dreams & aspirations will combine to create a monumental 32,000 sq ft work of art, providing a tangible demonstration of the beauty of individuals collaborating to meet universal challenges.

NEMJDS is proud to have our exhibit Grand Opening tomorrow (November 22nd) after our Chanukah/Thanksgiving Kabbalat Shabbat program.  Along the back window wall of the commons will be 15 original pieces of art from our own Day School students along with several pieces created by students from across the United States.

The exhibit remains at the Day School through December 6th before it continues to travel across the United States on exhibit in various schools.  The Saturn V Wrapping Exhibit is scheduled for May 1 - June 30, 2015 at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Huntsville, Alabama.

Special thanks to Ginger Brook and Marsha Henderson for bringing this project to life at NEMJDS!

STUDENTS EXCEL WORKING IN ENGLISH & HEBREW

Using subject integration, NEMJDS teachers work together to create rigorous, relevant, and engaging curriculum to compliment skills in both English and Hebrew.  The most recent example is a beautiful lobby display of English and Hebrew poetry celebrating Thanksgiving and Chanukah. Upper School students learned multiple styles of poetry, including rhyming and haiku to create their projects.  "It felt pretty impressive to be able to write a poem in English and one in Hebrew" stated Mason Berger, 6th grader. "We had to know a lot of words in Hebrew to be able to create these poems."

Poetry serves to improve vocabulary, fluency, expression, and writing skills while inspiring a greater interest in reading, writing.
