AROUND THE WORLD IN LESS THAN 80 DAYS!
Using an integrated lesson in math, science, geography, English and art, NEMJDS 6th and 7th grade students created a virtual travel plan to venture around the world in less than 80 days.  Students began their journey by reading the Jules Verne book, Around the World in Eighty Days.

Reuben Stein and Mason Berger work on Stratalogica.
Next was to create a personal travel itinerary, using Stratalogica - an on-line multi-layered and interactive geography tool.  The challenge was to make at least five stops in five different regions, identify the distance between each stop and estimate how long it would take to travel.

For each stop, students had to find a hotel and list how much it cost per night in U.S. dollars.  Students wrote a travel journal that included major historical events, famous landmarks, demographics and some personal thoughts about each city they were visiting.

Reuben Stein and Mason Berger prepare their globes.
Finally, students recreated their own globes, using pumpkins, to visually show their travel routes.  They marked off the latitude and longitude, continents and seas (with the correctly estimated size based on their pumpkin) and identified each of their stops around the world with push pins and string.  Sam Dillard, 7th grade, "would love to go to Himeji, Japan, to see a cool Japanese Castle and different culture.  It seems so interesting!"

Integrated studies involve bringing together traditionally separate subjects so that students can grasp a more authentic understanding.  Professors at Harvard Graduate School of Education have found interdisciplinary understanding to be crucial for modern-thinking students.

6th & 7th grade students display their pumpkin globe trips around the world.

SAM'S RUN - GREAT START TO THANKSGIVING
Start your Thanksgiving Day with a run and join 1,500 fellow community members as they honor the memory of our Alum, Sam Lapidus.  In addition to being a hard working student at the Day School, Sam was passionate about his work outs and became a fixture in the LJCC fitness center.
Alum Noah and Sam Lapidus with Susan.
When Sam lost his battle to cancer in 2008, the LJCC renamed the Thanksgiving race in his memory - Sam Lapidus Montclair Run.  Now in it's fifth year, the 'Sam Run' raises money for cancer research.  A portion from each runner's entry goes toward the Alabama Center for childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's of Alabama and the LJCC fitness program.  Last year the race raised more than $5,000 to support cancer treatment and research.
