FIRST GRADER CAUGHT AS STOWAWAY TO ISRAEL
N.E. Miles Jewish Day School takes a creative and innovative twist with a First grade project.  Much to the surprise of participants on the Birmingham Jewish Federation's Young Leadership Israel trip, an additional participant has snuck onto their tour.  The NEMJDS First Grade class sent Shimon HaShatuach (a.k.a. Flat Stanley, a paper doll made by the class) in the Kaplan's luggage!  Kindergarten and First Grade students have been following the adventures of Shimon and the Federation Young Leadership Israel trip via Facebook and Skype.  Every day they turn on their SmartBoard and Skype with the trip from their classroom.  So far, the class has joined the trip in Tel Aviv, Akko and Rosh Ha'ayin, Birmingham's sister city.  Working on the computer and SmartBoard, students look at daily changing pictures in Israel, feeding their incredible curiosity about Israeli culture and geography.  The highlight so far for our NEMJDS students?  Being part of the live audience, along with the Federation Young Leadership group, at a mandolin concert performed by 5th and 6th grade Rosh Ha'ayin students.   A special thanks to the Kaplan and Thornton parents for sharing their Israel adventure 'as-it-happens'!

'GIVE THANKS' SCHOOL-WIDE HOLIDAY SERVICE PROJECT
Give ThanksOnce again, our Day School is proud to be participating in two wonderful holiday tzedakah opportunities.

1.  Share the Spirit: Family to Family Holiday Service Project.  Through First Teacher's @ Home, the Day School has an opportunity for our students to perform a meaningful mitzvah for families who are less fortunate.  Our school has taken the information from local families which we hope to serve this holiday season.  NEMJDS families are asked to pull a feather off the Thanksgiving Turkey for their family to fill (each feather lists the need/wish for a special person in one of our sponsored families).  Please bring your donations (with your feather taped to the outside of your unwrapped gift) and leave it in the Day School lobby, beside our Thanksgiving Turkey.  Donations are due no later than Friday, December 6th.  We are also collecting non-perishable food items.

Adison Berger and Reuben Stein get ready for giving at Thanksgiving/Chanukah!

2.  Israel Defense Force Chanukah Sufganiot Tzedakah Project.
IDF soldiers receive their Chanukah sufganiyot.
For the second year, NEMJDS students are raising funds to h
elp provide sufganiot (jelly donuts) and chanukiot to Israeli soldiers s
erving during Chanukah.  Our goal is $300.

Last year, NEMJDS raised the funds to have sufganiot delivered to the Givati Brigade where Yona Stein (son of Morah Stein) was serving in northern Israel, near Kiryat Shmona.
