ROSH CHODESH RUAH ROCKED THE SCHOOL!
Rosh Chodesh Ruach rocked the halls of NEMJDS on Friday.  Our official monthly Jewish spirit day was launched with a surprise Rosh Chodesh t-shirt gift that says: I'm a NEMJDS Chai Achiever - one for each student, faculty member and administration staff at NEMJDS.  We even had the ECLC Ilanot join in!  Students also received their red tishri and orange cheshvan Ruach Bands.  We celebrated the new month with special, spirited tefillah and experienced school-wide Rosh Chodesh Recess at lunch.  How about combining Judaics and Science?  Of course! Upper School led a science program that taught the students the different phases of the moon, using oreo cookies.  And finally, we hung our Rosh Chodsh birthday board - an origianal piece of mosaic artwork, created by Alley Bulka and NEMJDS students.

2nd graders and Ms. Bernstein model their new Rosh Chodesh Ruach shirts.

Note:
Students should wear their purple Rosh Chodesh t-shirts each month (next day is November 5th) in order to earn more colored Ruach Bands.

ASO LOVES NEMJDS
Once again, NEMJDS hosted the Alabama Symphony Orchestra for an incredible performance in our very own gym!  Under the direction of assistant conductor, Roderick Cox, students were introduced to the various families of instruments that make up the entire orchestra, including:  string, woodwind, brass and percussion.  Students heard classic pieces of music that highlighted the various orchestra families.  The biggest cheer was given to the tuba when when it was raised to show the students.

Ellen Landy and her violin teacher/ASO member, Troy Bast.

5TH GRADE THINKS OUTSIDE THE 'BOX'
Using only their math skills and creativity, 5th grade students created a whole new series of products on display in our front lobby.  Students had to deconstruct a rectangular prism, take measurements, calculate perimeter, area, surface area and volume and construct their own boxes and 'school-related' products.  Students were responsible for graphic design using measurements and the creation of a cube model to verify their calculations.
