The Alachua County Commission and Ethics Rules

Recently, the Gainesville Sun has called for tightening the county commission ethics rules, and we find ourselves agreeing with the Gainesville Sun.

Ethics, are governed, in part, by law, and in part by the rules of individual legislative bodies, and those rules apply to both elected and appointed officials, including city, county and governor appointees.  The chief enforcer of ethics rules, in the state, is the Florida Commission on Ethics.

Florida Senate President Don Gaetz has talked about tightening up Florida's ethics rules for public officials, while the Alachua County Commission has ruled out making any changes to their own rules because they seem to believe that they are already the most ethical public / legislative body in the state.

Ethics violations by public officials come in all shapes and sizes, and include things like public officials not doing full financial disclosure, as required, or accepting gifts in excess of gift limits defined by the law.  Former Alachua County Commissioner, Cynthia Chestnut, paid a fine, a few years ago, for just such a thing.  Florida Ethics Commission files are also replete with cases of public officials using their position to exact retribution against political opponents, including a case in which a former Escambia County Commissioner sought to terminate the job of somebody that they deemed a political opponent.

Florida's ethics rules should be toughed up, and the Alachua County Commission should follow the lead of other Florida counties that have toughened up their ethics rules.

Senator Gaetz and the Gainesville Sun have this right.
