Futurecom 2012
We have two reviews/perspectives of this conference held Oct 8 - 11 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We thank Luiz and Harper for their contributions.

Futurecom 2012 was held in Rio de Janeiro for the first time with 230 companies represented by 300 lecturers and 21 interesting discussion panels. The attendance was similar to last year, with almost 15.000 visitors from 50 different countries, keeping the title of the largest telecommunications event in Brazil. The most interesting lectures during the first day were related to 4G-LTE deployment projects in Brazil and the successful case for Colombian's first commercial operation in Latin America. The vice president from Genband gave useful hints to developers working with mobile applications, from creating ways to share with your favorite social networks and taking advantage of cloud based infrastructure to keeping in mind that Brazil is now the 4th mobile market for number of connections. During the second day, some of the large budget governmental projects were discussed in one panel about the challenges and solutions for implementing smart cities and the other panel about the preparation for the big events (World Cup'14 and Olympics'16) that Brazil will be hosting. One interesting topic was the differences on ICT consumer usage from Beijing'08 to London'12 and it was pointed out that there is lots of room for innovative mobile apps to be created. The last day was centered on very enthusiast ICT gurusand named as MegaTrends Day with lectures from Jon "Maddog" Hall - Linux director, John Strand - IC consultant and Nicholas Carr- IT writer. During the three days, there was also a Trade Show from several sponsors and the most interesting booth was from Embratel which presented Williams´ Formula 1 car alongside Bruno Senna´s pilot jumpsuit in one corner and a F1 Driving Simulator in the other corner of the booth. The event was very successful and next year's venue will be Rio de Janeiro again. Author: Harper Price-Brown, Mobile Marketer An event for "suits to meet suits". A dress code was even listed on the front page of the website. There may have been a developer section on the website but Futurecom has a few years to go to catch up on its attitude towards developers when looking at other major conferences in both North America and Europe. The concentration of this event was hardware with seven of the top 12 sponsors being networking and communication manufacturers. The feeling of the event itself was relatively good - a lot of the stands had people overflowing and lots of good networking, although more then 80% of the conversations were in Portuguese. Approximately 40% of the conference's presentations were in English. They lacked enthusiasm since the majority of the audiences could not clearly understand what was being said. As the mobile industry grows in South America, so will this conference. Unless you are in the hardware business, this one deserves a skip for the next few years. .
