Dear Friends of Clean Air,
Come out Thursday night to learn and express your concerns about a new, unneeded gas plant in our neighborhood. (Details to the left.)
Fighting for sustainable energy has brought us all nose to nose with those who wish to see a large gas-powered plant sitting on the Salem Harbor site for the next 40 years or more. The owners of the site have friends in high place, high-powered and well-paid lawyers and engineers; we have each other and the public interest in mind.
Please come to the hearing Thursday night and express your solidarity with the opposition to the plant.
The main reasons to oppose the construction of this plant are:
- This planned gas plant is not necessary for reliability.
- Our region, with the closing of so many coal plants, is now overly dependent on gas. The $900 million invested in this plant (over half by the ratepayers) could be better spent on renewable projects.
- This plant will emit tons of unhealthy pollutants into the air and with its short fat stack, fall on the children in the Bentley School as well as those in nearby elderly housing.
- This plant does not satisfy the conditions of the Massachusetts Global Warming Solutions Act passed unanimously by the Legislature but instead adds greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Those who compare it to the soon-to-be-closed coal plant are making a specious comparison. This gas plant must be compared with no plant on the site!
- An explosion at the plant or in the large gas line (to be built under the neighborhood) due to negligence, accident, or terrorism could be disastrous to the area.
A Salem resident has used his Webb St. garage, opposite the site of the plant, to inform passers-by of the reasons for his opposition for the plant. Jeff Brooks is a well-informed resident of Salem and a member of a newly-formed organization opposing the gas plant - Grassroots Against Another Salem Power Plant. They will be in attendance Thursday night; come and meet them.
