Under pressure to provide for the economic tax base in the city, Salem officials and citizens last night supported another 60 years of a fossil fuel-fired power plant. ("Power plant gets warm reception at public hearing" - Salem News headline 9/20/12). HealthLink opposes this plant since this power is not needed according to the ISO New England and, therefore, actually increases pollution.
The deadline for comments to the Energy Facilities Siting Board is October 3 (see link). More hearings are to come in the review process and we will keep you informed so that you can weigh in to protect the environment and encourage efficiency, conservation and sustainable power generation.
HealthLink mission: To protect and improve public health by reducing and eliminating toxins and pollutants from our environment through research, education and community action.
