From Ashima Scripp, Artistic Director
This season Walden is continuing its tradition of innovative programming and collaborations with some fantastic new projects and events. Already this season we've seen a World Premiere of our newest commission, Music in Circles II, by the young American composer Andrew Norman; the inspiring performance of our 2012 Young Artist Competition winner: bassoonist Jake Thonis; our first set of recording sessions in the WGBH studio for our latest CD and the launching of our newest educational initiative on Nantucket Island. This spring the action continues with residencies and national touring; a collaborative performance of the Ligeti String Quartet No. 2 with dancers from Concord Academy, a concert of Cuban chamber music with guitarist Robert Bekkers and our Annual Gala. We feel so very fortunate to be able to present these unique musical events and we hope you will join us this spring!

In the Studio
This October recording began for our latest CD: A Voice Gone Silent Too Soon: the music of Gerhard Schedl at the Fraser Performance Studio at WGBH in Boston. Two tracks: A due and A Tre are 'in the can' and sounding great! We are so grateful to our engineer Antonio Oliart for his amazing work in the studio. We will be finishing the remaining tracks this spring and are happy to announce that the completed CD will beready for release by June of this year. |
Behind the Scenes
Recognize these two? If you guessed Walden violist Christof Huebner and hornist Clark Matthews you'd be right! Beyond being serious musicians these guys are serious bikers too. "While one of Walden Chamber Players' mottos may be "Music - the human experience through sound", it may also apply to cycling." says Walden hornist Clark Matthews. "When exhausted of seeking improvement on our instruments for the day it's sometimes helpful to seek the human experience on wheels!" When they aren't busy practicing, teaching or rehearsing you can find these two hitting the pavement all over Boston and beyond - so watch out!

In the Classroom
Following in our tradition of innovative and vibrant community partnerships this fall Walden launched our latest educational initiative: Chamber Music ACK, a chamber music residency program in the Nantucket Public Schools. The first two resid ency weeks were action-packed and allowed us to bring live chamber music to EVERY student K-5 in the island's public school system. We also collaborated with high school composers, singers and guitarists in advance of a final performance on May 23 at the Dreamland Studio Theater. Thanks to Johnson String Instrument we were able to hold an "Instrument Petting Zoo" and performance for over 200 kids and parents. We look forward to working towards making this program an annual event!
