UNITED STUDENTS TRAVEL TO CUBA, ISRAEL AND PALESTINETop

 

Master's degree students from United traveled internationally in January and February as part of the Seminary's Contextual Theology and Immersion Program. From Jan. 5 through Jan. 15, David Watson, Academic Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs, led a group of 14 through Cuba, while Christopher and Lisa Heckaman of Trinity United Methodist Church in Columbus, OH, adjunct instructor Brian Maguire, associate professor Lisa Hess, and Rabbi Brad Hirschfield led a group of 15 through Israel and Palestine from Jan. 26 through Feb. 4.

LENTEN DEVOTIONAL SERIES ON HOLINESS

 

United's Worship and Spiritual Life Committee is offering a weekly devotional for staff, faculty, students, alumni/ae and friends to guide you in cultivating awareness of the Holy during this Lenten season. Every Monday morning, Feb.16 through April 6, a devotional will be posted both to United.edu and The Hub, United's online community for current students, faculty and staff. Devotionals written by contributors including faculty, staff, alumni/ae and students will explore holiness as experienced from Ash Wednesday through Good Friday.

SPRING MASTER'S INTENSIVES: FEB. 11-14 and 18-21

 

Spring semester begins for master's degree students this month with two Master's Intensives, Feb. 11-14 and Feb. 18-21. Nearly 100 students will gather on-campus each day for coursework and worship. Morning prayer and afternoon worship services, held daily at 7:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. in Thie Fellowship Hall, are open to the public. Regular on-campus classes begin Feb. 23.

EASTER PREACHING WORKSHOP: FEB. 27 

 

Join us on Feb. 27, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for Proclaiming the Gospel: Preaching the Easter Story, a one-day workshop on preaching the Gospel lessons of the Easter season. Dr. Richard Eslinger, Professor of Homiletics and Worship, will lead participants through an exploration of Gospel imagery pointing to the risen Christ and a discussion of strategies for preaching these rich Scriptures.

DEBORAH'S DAUGHTERS SPRING CONFERENCE TO FOCUS ON WOMEN IN MINISTRY

 

The 2015 Deborah's Daughters conference, Women Preach, Teach and Spread the Word, will be held March 13-14 at Calvary Tremont Missionary Baptist Church in Columbus, OH. This conference is for all women in ministry and leadership.

COURSE OF STUDY: APPLY NOW FOR SPRING AND SUMMER SESSIONS

 

The Winter 2015 Course of Study kicked off with an on-campus weekend, Jan. 16-17. Over 80 students from 20 UMC conferences arrived on campus to begin five different COS courses. Students will continue their coursework online through the end of the term on Feb. 28.

 

Course of Study is prescribed by The United Methodist Church for the education of persons serving as Local Pastors. Additional on-campus weekends for the spring and summer terms will be hosted March 20-21, May 8-9 and June 19-20. Applications are still being accepted for Spring 2015 and Summer 2015. Details HERE.

OVER $830,000 CONTRIBUTED IN DECEMBER!

 

Thank you to everyone who contributed to a very successful fundraising appeal in December 2014. With your help, we raised a total of $830,900, including $125,590 for United's Effective Ministry Fund. Gifts to the Effective Ministry Fund will be put to use immediately to provide student scholarships, develop new programs and support the daily operations of the Seminary.

UNITED FACULTY MEMBERS PUBLISHED IN NEW BIBLE COMMENTARY 

 

Two United faculty members are contributors to the new two-volume Fortress Commentary on the Bible (Fortress Press, 2014). Thomas B. Dozeman, Professor of Old Testament, is the contributor on Exodus, and Vivian Johnson, Professor of Old Testament and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the contributor on Greek Esther. In this major scholarly project, entries on each book of the Bible focus on ancient context, history of interpretation, and contemporary significance of the text.
