UNITED STAFF VISIT HORIZON PRISON INITIATIVE

On Oct. 27, President Wendy Deichmann and Dr. Mark Abbott, director of non-degree programs, visited Marion Correctional Institution, a state prison in Marion, OH, to learn about Horizon Prison Initiative. Horizon is a multifaith prison program based in Ohio, designed to reduce the rate of reincarceration among program participants. According to Horizon, program graduates have only a 10 percent rate of recidivism, compared to the national average of 67 percent.

For Dr. Abbott, the visit reinforced the importance of prison ministries. "We have more prisons in this country than any country in the world," he said. "At the very least, our students should be exposed to prisons and prisoners and think about how their church can be in support."
