Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Breakfast

The largest event of its kind in the United States honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be observed on the national Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday commemorating the fallen civil rights leader.  United alumnus Dr. DeForest Soaries '92, is the keynote speaker.  The public is invited to this event on Monday at The Greater Columbus Convention Center, 400 N. High St., Columbus.  Doors open at 7 a.m., and the program begins at 7:30 a.m.  Tickets are $35 per person and $350 per table seating 10.  For more information, click here.


UD Speaker Series - MLK Celebration

Eboo Patel, founder of a global movement promoting interfaith cooperation, will keynote the annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration at the University of Dayton at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the RecPlex.  The celebration will begin with short student reflections and performances.  Part of the University of Dayton Speaker Series, the evening events are free and open to the public. Online Discussion About Human Trafficking

In commemoration of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, the Office for Victims of Crime, in collaboration with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, will present a web forum discussion at noon (EST) Tuesday with Fiona Mason and Danny Stewart on best practices for providing services to runaway youth and victims of human trafficking.  Click here to visit the OVC Web Forum to submit questions for Ms. Mason and Mr. Stewart.  On Tuesday, click here for instructions on how to participate.

 

Jeremy Winston Chorale Performance  The Jeremy Winston Chorale will be performing at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 27 at Concord United Methodist Church.  Tickets are $17 per person and are available by calling the church office at 937.836.3773 or by clicking here.  Winston is United's Music Director, and the ensemble professional ensemble won one gold and two silver medals this summer at the World Choir Games and also sang for the President, First Lady and many distinguished guests and the White House in December 2012.  Concord United Methodist Church is located at 1123 S. Ohio Ministries Convocation

The 2013 Ohio Ministries Convocation will be held in two locations this year, with Brian D. McLaren as the keynote speaker at both locations. The first will be Monday, January 28 in Columbus at the Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 E. Pedals, Pipes and Pizza 

Pedals, Pipes and Pizza, presented by the Dayton Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, will be a fun-filled morning including introduction to the organ, its history and sounds, organ crawl and an opportunity to play a piano piece on the organ, as well as a pizza lunch. Students in grades first to 12th with piano skills (adults are welcome to watch) are invited to develop an appreciation of organ in worship from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, February 2 at South Park United Methodist Church, 140 Stonemill, Dayton (corner of Brown and Stonemill near UD). Gathering of Young Eagles 2013

Gathering of Young Eagles 2013: A Call, A Gospel, A Task will be at the J.H. Ross Sr. Family Life & Community Center, 907 Lexington Ave., Columbus, OH, on February 22 and 23.  Registration Check-in begins at 5:30 p.m., with the session at 7 p.m. on Friday, February 22.  Registration Check-in will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, February 23, with the session beginning at 9 a.m.  For more information, call 614.299.7069.

 

Bill Chidester Lecture Series

Nationally renowned theologians Martin Marty, Alan Jones, Diana Butler Bass and Daniel Spencer will explore what it means to be a Christian in the 21st century as part of the four-part Bill Chidester Lecture Series in 2013 at Sylvania United Church of Christ in Sylvania, Ohio. Alan Jones will speak March 16 to 17. Diana Butler Bass, author, speaker and independent scholar specializing in American religion and culture, will speak September 21 to 22. Daniel Spencer will be the fourth and final speaker November 16 to 17. Saturday lectures will be from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. including 30 minutes of Q&A, followed by light refreshments and conversation. Sunday lectures will be from 9:20 a.m. to 10:20 a.m. between services. Pohly Center 

Returns to Australia

 
Marilyn and Roger Evans, Co-Directors of the Kenneth H. Pohly Center for Supervision and Leadership Formation, return to Perth, Western Australia the end of January to lead two five-day intensive seminars for the Uniting Church of Western Australia.   The Introductory Supervision Intensive Seminar and Advanced Supervision Seminar are designed for pastors, chaplains, field educators and other ministry leaders.   A Pohly Supervision Certification program in Western Australia was established in 2012 as a partnership between the Pohly Center and Perth Theological Hall.
 
United Methodist Dollars for Scholars
 
Each year through the United Methodist Dollars for Scholars program, The United Methodist Higher Education Foundation provides a $1,000 scholarship from their local United Methodist church to help them attend a United Methodist-related college, university or seminary.  Awards are made for the Fall term of each school year.  Additional matching funds may be available to eligible applicants through the Triple Your Dollars and/or the Quadruple Your Dollars components of the UMDFS program.  The number of available matching scholarships is determined annually.  Available matching funds include 25 scholarships designated for Hispanic-, Asian- and Native American (HANA) students funded by the United Methodist General Board of Higher Education and Ministry.  The application period runs until March 1 for all UMHEF scholarships.  Apply online here.  NOTE: These scholarships are not from United; all inquiries should be directed to UMHEF.
