Academic Dean named to The
University Senate

David Watson

United's Academic Dean, Dr. David Watson, was recently elected by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The UMC to serve on The University Senate.

"I was surprised and delighted to have been selected," Dr. Watson said. "I certainly didn't see it coming."

Dr. Watson will attend his first meeting as a member of The University Senate in late January.

The University Senate is composed of members who are actively engaged in the work of education through employment in an educational institution and are fitted by training and experience for the technical work of evaluating educational institutions.


President to Serve as Chair of Women in Leadership for ATS

At the 2012 biennial meeting of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in the U.S. and Canada, United President Wendy Deichmann was elected to serve as Chair of the Women in Leadership (WiL) Committee for a two-year term, following her membership on the Committee for the previous two years.

Through the work of WiL, the international accrediting association "provides educational support for women faculty and administrators and assists schools in their efforts to include more women in leadership positions." This includes professional development for women through ATS-sponsored events, including an annual conference for women in faculty and administrative positions, a retreat for senior administrators and research geared toward supporting the roles of women in leadership in theological education.


United Representatives Attend Scholarship Dinner

United staff members Dr. Wendy Deichmann, Rev. Rhansyl Harris, Rev. Tim Forbess and Ms. JoAnn Wagner attended the Bishop John Hopkins Scholarship Endowment Dinner on October 18 in North Canton, OH. Also attending were guests of United who are part of the East Ohio Conference, including Rev. Dr. Gary Olin and Rev. Sally Nelson-Olin, Rev. David and Mrs. Jean Martin, Pastor Molly Brown and Ms. Joy Watts.

The dinner was a fundraiser for the Timothy Fund, which provides crucial support for gifted students who are preparing for Christian ministry. The evening raised nearly $100,000, with approximately 350 guests attending. United's gift and the gifts of many others will benefit students at one of Ohio's five United Methodist Universities –- Otterbein, Ohio Wesleyan, Ohio Northern, Mount Union and Baldwin-Wallace –- who plan to become local church pastors in East Ohio.


Advent Commencement at Ginghamsburg Featuring Bishop Coyner

Advent Commencement

Advent Commencement will be held December 14 at Ginghamsburg UMC, 6759 S. County Road 25A, Tipp City, OH. The Eucharist will be at 9:30 a.m., with commencement at 1 p.m. Bishop Michael Coyner, Bishop of the Indiana Area, UMC, is the commencement speaker.

Bishop CoynerBishop Coyner is originally from Anderson, IN. He received his B.A. from Purdue University, his M. Div. from Duke Divinity School and his Doctor of Ministry from Drew Theological School. He was elected a Bishop of the United Methodist Church in 1996 and was assigned to serve the Dakotas Area, where he served two terms. In 2004, Bishop Coyner was assigned to return to the Indiana Area as Bishop. He oversees the life and ministry of 1,250 United Methodist congregations.

D.Min. Intensive to Focus on Human Trafficking

The Doctor of Ministry Intensive will run from January 28 to February 1, 2013. This intensive's theme will be "Human Trafficking and Domestic Violence: A Faithful Response" and will feature speakers including Dr. David Watson, Dr. Marie Fortune and Dr. Tony Talbott.
