From the Office of the Principal
Common Core Night
As you may know, the California State Department of Education adopted the Common Core State Standards in 2010. The state allowed for a four year transition period and this is the first year of the new standard implementation for English Language Arts and Literacy and mathematics. Las Lomas is hosting a Common Core Night on Thursday, September 18 at 7:00pm in the library to educate our community about the Common Core Standards. This is an ideal evening to become more informed about the curricular and instructional changes and to have your questions answered.
New Staff Member
Please welcome Mindy Huang to our staff. Monday was her first day as our EL instructional aide and office assistant. She will assist our EL/SDAIE teachers, work with our EL students and assist in the counseling office.
Alumni Update
Elizabeth Lanfranki, Class of 2008, was named Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year. Lizzie is beginning her 4th year in education and currently teaches English at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School in Pittsburg. We wish her well as she continues the competition at the state level in the California State Teacher of the Year competition.
Kira Kazantsev, LLHS ASB President and 2009 graduate, was crowned Miss America last night. She represented New York because she attended college there, but she is a proud Knight. We wish her and her family congratulations on her accomplishment.

BoxTops for Education
A big welcome to the ninth grade students and their parents! Now that your child is at Las Lomas, you may be wondering what to do with all those Box Top coupons. Please keep collecting them, and have your child drop them off in the Attendance Office. There is a Box Top receptacle there just waiting to be filled! All the monies earned buys new books for the WCI library - what a great way to start another school year! Our goal is to collect LOTS of box top coupons - and we can do that with your help! If there are any questions, please contact Anne Woods at shepwoods@comcast.net. And, of course, a big thank you to all the students (and their parents!) for their continuing support on behalf of the WCI library. |
