President's Message
by Wayne L. Munyer, PHR
2013-14 Volunteer PIHRA President One last push for this year's California HR Conference, August 26-28, 2013. The only way to register for the conference is online or onsite. It is never too late. Go to http://cahrconference.org for further information. Do not miss one of the premier HR events of the year.
Also I want to do a shout out for one of our own staff members, Brian Allain, our Business Development Manager. He recently completed the Center For Nonprofit Management's Nonprofit Leadership Development Program (NLDP). NLDP provides promising senior leaders and executives a forum to grow the skills necessary for advancement in their professional career, enhance the work of their organization and strengthen their community. Brian put a lot of hard work and dedication to this program to make him a better association professional. Great job Brian and thanks for all you do to make PIHRA better.
I would also like to recognize and thank the volunteer leaders and staff for helping PIHRA surpass the 2012 end of the year 3,497 total membership. North Orange Co. and Riverside already exceeded their membership goals and eleven other locations will meet their goals in the next couple of months. With your help, we can continue to grow our association and serve the industry. I encourage you to invite your colleagues and friends join.
No one likes to make mistakes, but handling them the right way provides useful insights. In order to turn a mistake into something productive, be willing to learn from the error. Brooding about failure or dwelling on a problem won't resolve the issue. It's better to objectively analyze what went wrong and look for ways to prevent it from happening again. Don't let pride keep you from admitting that a mistake was made. When things don't go as expected, it can be eye-opening to talk over the issue with others. A group can brainstorm effective solutions, resulting in improvement to a product or process. Anyone who takes risks or experiments with a new way of doing things is bound to fail numerous times before succeeding. Thomas Edison tried thousands of times before he found the perfect filament for a long-lasting light bulb. He did not look at his numerous attempts as failures, but as finding thousands of ways that would not work. In the right light, failure can resemble success. Rather than becoming mired in disappointment over a mistake, take advantage of an opportunity to keep trying.
I hope to see a lot of you at the conference.
Wayne L Munyer, PHR 2013-14 PIHRA Volunteer President

It's August - do you know where your Lactation Accommodation policy is? by Genevieve Thomas Colvin, IBCLC - BreastfeedLA
|
August is National Breastfeeding Month, so my phone rings off the hook with people interested in learning about breastfeeding. Recently, I had a call from an employee asking me about the legal space considerations for a reasonable accommodation for lactation. Turned out her employer had done some good things, like establishing policy, dedicating a space and furnishing it. However, there were 7 nursing mothers to schedule into the space and another 100+ employees in the office. At times the space was either in use by another mother, or had been commandeered by employees for "private conversations". This meant that she missed her lactation breaks and consequently her milk supply was significantly compromised. Even worse, her HR supervisor was unmoved by her request for an alternate location, because they felt they had met the minimum requirements of the law...by dedicating space. MORE

Seemingly Harmless Hiring Practices Can Get You Into Trouble by Josie Gonzalez and Amanda Paquet, Stone Grzegorek & Gonzalez LLP
|
Immigration-related employment practices have become more and more complex and it is now more likely than ever that a seemingly harmless hiring practice may lead to a charge against an employer for discrimination on the basis of national origin, citizenship, or immigration status, including discriminatory Form I-9 and E-Verify practices. The opportunity to get "caught" is enhanced because the Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices ("OSC") and the National Labor Relations Board ("NLRB") have recently "teamed up" to combine their resources to address claims against employers.
