Vote for Blockhouse Island: a 'Great Place' in Canada

Blockhouse Island in Brockville has been nominated as a 2014 'Great Place' in the annual contest hosted by the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), heralded as 'a sort of a combination of Peggy's Cove, Stanley Park's Seawall and Victoria's waterfront but on a more intimate and varied scale',

Canadians will vote for the Peoples' Choice awards in each category, while the CIP judging panel of planning experts will pick the Great Places in Canada for 2014. The most popular places nominated will be highlighted as finalists on the Great Places in Canada website.

Vote to let Canada know what a great place Brockville's Blockhouse Island is.
Voting ends September 25, 2014.

Promoting the Rideau Canal at the World Canals Conference

Mayor Doug Struthers and Darlene Upton, representing the Rideau Canal in Milan, Italy
The Village of Merrickville-Wolford Mayor Doug Struthers is attending the 27th annual World Canals Conference in Milan, Italy, this week. He will give a 40-minute presentation with Darlene Upton, Parks Canada Executive Director of Waterways. Kawartha Voyageur tour boat operator Marc Ackert is also at the conference.

As ambassadors of the Rideau Canal and Rideau Heritage Route, they will be presenting to over 200 delegates from around the world. A National Geographic survey recently touted the Rideau as the second most authentic, sustainable tourism destination in the world. Mr. Struthers said the goal of the local delegation is to increase on-land and on-water tourism traffic by promoting the Rideau Canal as a world-class tourism destination.

Other representatives from Norway, Netherlands, Italy, South Korea, France, Serbia, Chile,  United Kingdom and the United States are also presenting.
