A VIEW FROM THE TOPFollow us on TwitterVisit our blog
Dear Parents,

The school has been relatively quiet this week, as the older students have been writing examinations. We all wish them the very best of luck and for all their hard work to pay off.

It was good to see everyone at Tuesday's Athletic Banquet, and to meet our new families at Wednesday's reception for new parents. This morning's Volunteer Breakfast was another lovely event that gave us all a chance to thank our wonderful volunteers.

With three graduations and other closing events to come, I hope to connect with you all before the summer vacation begins.

Have a good weekend.

by Helen Pereria-Raso
It is hard to believe that it is June and that the school year will soon come to a close. Although I am sure there is a sigh of relief from our students, we are sad to see them go as schools aren't quite the same when they are empty!

Our Senior School s
tudents are writing exams and getting ready for some much-deserved time off this summer. Many students like to use this time to continue their studies and take summer school courses that will allow them flexibility in their schedule for the next school year. The HTS summer program continues to expand their academic offerings for students to take during the month of July. Click here to learn more.

I wish our Middle School students all the best as they prepare for their final exams next week and ask them to make sure they eat and rest properly before all exams. Be sure to trust that all your hard work has prepared you for the final stretch.

Lastly, our Kindies had perfect weather for their beach day this week and they've been counting down the days to summer break! Before they leave we will celebrate Senior Kindergarten graduation.

As exciting as it may be to wrap up the year, it is also sad to say goodbye to our friends. So I hope that each of our students take time to cherish their friends, teachers, and make even more memories before they all head off for the summer.

Canadian Communities; Past and Present

Our Grade 6 students are finishing a remarkable project about their ancestry. Their creative and inspiring teachers, Ms Brenda Balfour and Ms Heather MacDonald, asked them to video interview a family member that has immigrated to Canada in order to learn about and re-tell their story through an iMovie. The students needed to explore why the decision was made to move to Canada, how life is similar/different to the life led in the country of origin, and how the interviewee might agree/disagree with the statement that "Canada is a Cultural Mosaic."

It truly has been a privilege to hear some of these very personal reflections. You can hear the emotion in a grandfather's voice as he shares his story of trial and anxiety. There are beautiful images of family members working or playing in different contexts. The student's young voices are interwoven with the recordings while music and graphics beautifully complement each account. They are stunning compilations of all the learning they have done in social studies this year in the context of their proficiency with combining iPad apps.

It struck me how precious it would be for these children to have this recording for years to come and it is wonderful to think that technology has provided them with an opportunity they would not have otherwise had.
PARENTS' GUILD
Thank you!

This morning at the annual HTS Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast, we said "Thank You" to the many parents who have given their time and talents to enhance life at the school over the last year. If you were not able to attend, please know that our thanks go to you, too! Without an active parent volunteer body, HTS would not be the special community that we are now.

We hope you enjoy your summer and we will see you back in the Fall for another year of Grade Parents, Sundaes, Popcorn, Baked with Love, Hawk Shop and other fun-filled activities organized by the Parents' Guild!

A special thanks to the retiring Parents' Guild Executive Members:
Carmelina Baiamonte, Lori Dalimonte, Farzana Jetha, Linda McAree, Mary Romeo, Deanna Todd, Nancy Vamvakas, and Katherine Webster.

Grades 4 & 5 CNML Math Contest - Congratulations!
Congratulations to our Grade 4 and 5 CNML Math contest finalists! All Grade 4 and 5 students are to be recognized for participating. This was a challenging contest, and they are to be commended for a job well done.

This contest requires students to complete 30 challenging multiple choice questions in 30 minutes, and any score above 14 points is considered exceptional!

Our top Grade 4 finalists were Chloe Leung scoring 18 points, Gabriella Attardo in second place scoring 16 points, and Ben Wu and Arianna Yu in third place with 15 points each.

Our top Grade 5 finalists were Joy Hu scoring an impressive 28 points! In second place was Donald Pan scoring 22 points, and third place was Alisha Chan with 20 points.

Well done to all of our Grade 4 and 5 students, and good luck next year!

Science Olympics Team 2016

On May 26, our HTS Science Olympics team of 22 students from Grades 9 to 12 competed against approximately one thousand other participants at the University of Western Ontario.

Our first place finish in Fermi Questions reached a new level of success as the judges were shocked to not have found a single mistake in our answers. We were told it has never happened before!

In the robotics competition, the final round consisted of three robots, all of which were HTS robots. As a result, our robots received first, second, and third places.

We also came third in a very hard and highly competitive chemistry event called Compound Boggle.

As a team coach, I am very proud for our team efforts and achievements this year and would like to use this opportunity to extend my sincere congratulations to all Science Olympics team members:

Sarina Mao, Matthew Selucky, Rachel Lai-Fat-Fur, Kevin Ko, Ryan Tso, Daniel Kwan, Colin Dewar, Anne Vo, Christy Liang, Brendan Tao, Violleta Chen, Taylor Lynn Curtis, Ryan Kang, Amir Moradi, Daniel Mogilny, Gabriel Siu, Sam Kang, Maddie Abramian, Krishna Sethi, Emily Adams, Vazrik Mansoorian, and Anmol Turkel.

BUS INFORMATION
Registration for the 2016-2017 HTS bus service is now open. If you would like to register your child(ren), please register by Thursday, June 30, 2016, as routes and pick-up and drop-off points can only be planned after ridership is known. It may not be possible to accommodate registrations received after June 30, 2016. HTS works closely with the bus company to establish these details and we anticipate they will be finalized by August 21, 2016.
