Biergarten benefitting AGP

Come on out to support AlabamaGermany Partnership on Thursday, August 18, at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center has chosen AGP to be the featured nonprofit organization at their German Biergarten. They will make donation to our organization by contributing a portion of food sales the evening of August 18th.

This is a great opportunity to network with not only AGP's board and members; but also AGP member AAMA's (Alabama Automotive Manufacturers Association) members as we join forces for this event.

The Biergarten is in the Saturn V Hall in the Davidson Center for Space Exploration at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and features authentic German cuisine. Enjoy the festive atmosphere with imported and domestic beers and delicious wines from the German region.

"Disappointed" Löw questions future as Germany manager
By thelocal.de

Germany coach Joachim Löw refused to commit himself to stay beyond the next World Cup campaign as he picked through the wreckage of the country's Euro 2016 exit.

Antoine Griezmann scored twice in Marseille on Thursday to guide France to a 2-0 win and a place in Sunday's European Championship final against Portugal.

The world champions crashed out, but Löw said Germany had been the better team on the night. "We were the better team, we invested a lot [in the match]," said Löw.

Protecting and sustaining the environment has evolved into one of the most significant priorities for today's corporations. Due to new and ever-changing government regulations and directed local initiatives, it is increasingly important for leading manufacturers and material suppliers to encourage their organizations to implement sound environmental practices that promote sustainable resource stewardship.

The purpose of the Summit for Sustainability in Materials & Manufacturing is to identify current changes in environmental and sustainability standards, and to inform manufacturing leaders and decision makers of best practices, smart solutions and innovations available to their organizations. Conference programming will focus on strategic resource management and address opportunities to implement cost savings due to sustainable practices.

John M. Horack joins Ohio State as inaugural Neil Armstrong Chair in Aerospace Policy

Congratulations to AGP Board Member Dr. John M. Horack!

The Ohio State University College of Engineering and John Glenn College of Public Affairs announce that Dr. John M. Horack will hold a joint appointment with both colleges as the inaugural Neil Armstrong Chair in Aerospace Policy. He also will be a tenured professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

"It is a tremendous honor to join The Ohio State University in the capacity of the Neil Armstrong Chair," Horack said. "Since John Glenn and Neil Armstrong led the pioneering of human spaceflight in the United States, space has become an ever-more indispensable part of our lives. It is among the most interdisciplinary of all human endeavors, literally at the edge of our collective capability, and requires deep interconnections and synergies between the technical and policy communities.

"Ohio State's comprehensive aerospace, science, public policy, and other assets make it a unique environment in which to lead the pursuit and realization of a more relevant and more productive set of global space activities, across the civil, commercial, and security domains."

German Teacher in Alabama

Erika Hille Rinker,
Assistant Professor of German, University of Alabama at Birmingham

Erika Hille Rinker is responsible for all sections of German offered at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and advises all German minors. Both in the language classroom and in her role as the facilitator of Stammtisch, Erika looks for opportunities to share her interests in her discipline, especially the intersections of twentieth-century German and Austrian literature, culture, and popular medical discourses. In an effort to expand opportunities for UAB German students to study abroad, Erika maintains a relationship with Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen that grew out of her participation in the 2010 Baden-Württemberg Seminar for American Faculty in German and German Studies. As a result, intermediate German students from UAB may affordably complete their minor in German through the Spring Intensive Program at Universität Tübingen.

In addition to growing the German program at UAB, Erika has regularly offered English-language courses required by the Foreign Language Major Common Core. Among these courses, she found most enjoyable the design and teaching of the Foreign Language Capstone Seminar based on the representations of gender and war in film adaptations of early- and mid-twentieth-century texts. Recently she has also offered a service-learning option for the FLL 120 Foreign Cultures course by partnering with UAB's English Language Institute to pair Foreign Languages and Literatures students with international language partners. This partnership creates opportunities for international students to speak freely and spontaneously and to receive respectful and immediate feedback on their English from FLL 120 students. This service is matched in kind by the opportunities the ELI students offer FLL 120 students to engage in first-person, cross-cultural dialogues related directly to expected learning outcomes of the course.

The 2015 - 2016 academic year has been especially good to Erika. With the support of Douglas Lightfoot, Associate Professor of German and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Classics at the University of Alabama, Erika was awarded the 2015 Goethe-Institut / American Association of Teachers of German Certificate of Merit; with the support of her students and Julian Arribas, Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at UAB, she was awarded the 2016 Provost Award for Faculty Excellence in Education Abroad. At home, Erika and her husband, John, divide their time among the many activities of their children, from Clara's singing with the Birmingham Girls Choir and musical theater through UAB's ArtPlay to Klaus's Homewood All Star baseball. Erika and John are very much looking forward to hiking along Minnesota's North Shore at the end of June while Clara and Klaus take their first German immersion plunge at Waldsee in Concordia Language Villages!
