Mauerspecht
If you've ever traveled to Germany, there's a good chance you've seen tiny pieces of the Berlin Wall for sale at a souvenir shop. But the wall is gone - so where did these colorful pieces come from?
After the East German border was opened up 25 years ago, countless people made their way to the wall, equipped with pickaxes and sledgehammers. They tirelessly chipped away at the wall. Their motivations varied, but in general such a person was called a Mauerspecht.
In German, Mauer means wall and Specht means woodpecker. AMauerspecht, therefore, refers to a person who chips away at a wall (specifically, the Berlin Wall, since the word arose in this context and had never been used before). The closest English equivalent would be the word "stonepecker."

AGP's 16th Annual Celebration Dinner
| |
Greetings!
As Chairman of the Alabama Germany Partnership, I want to give thanks to all of you who attended, participated and sponsored the 16th Annual Celebration of the Alabama Germany Partnership. A record-setting 260 people attended the Celebration at Bryant Denny Stadium at The University of Alabama.
The Celebration was spectacular. Those attending the Celebration were treated with insightful remarks and commentary from German Consul General Chistoph Sander, Alabama Commerce Secretary Greg Canfield, the University of Alabama Vice Chancellor Joe Bonner, and Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox. After hearing the inspirational message from University of Alabama Strength Coach, Scott Cochran, we will never again utter the forbidden words of "can't", "hot" or "tired!"

German Company Visit: WKW Erbsloeh NA, LLC
| |
By Tine Hoffmeister
The week after the ice storm had hit Alabama, I visited with Klaus-Dieter Lengelsen, President of WKW Erbsloeh North America, LLC (WENA) at their location in Pell City. Production had been down for a few days - certainly longer that Mr. Lengelsen liked. He has worked for WKW.automotive for 10 years, and the last year here at WENA in Alabama. During my visit I also had the pleasure of meeting Andre Saxenhammer, Plant Manager and Daniela Cook, Executive Administrative Assistant.

WENA officially opened its production facility in Pell City in June 2008. The American subsidiary of WKW.automotive covers an area of 130,000 square feet, which is nearly full capacity. However the 970,000-square-foot property has room for future expansion. In January 2014 WENA had more than 575 employees (including approx. 90 temporary workers).

Rausch & Pausch LP (RAPA) held a grand opening ceremony on March 5th in Auburn Technology Park West. RAPA will produce high-precision automobile parts including an engine stop/start system designed to reduce fuel consumption by reducing vehicle idling time. Stop/start technology is increasingly being employed throughout the automotive industry.
Guests at the event were able to see a highly-automated assembly line in action at RAPA's 70,000 square foot facility in Auburn Technology Park West. This Powerful collection of 100 unique and distinguished photographs is a pictorial narrative sharing the history of two nations divided by war: Korea and Germany.
The history of these divided nations is often unknown or forgotten. Korea remains divided after 60 years. Germany reunited just 25 years ago and now celebrates the 10-year anniversary of the highly successful Green Zone, European Green Belt. This thriving nature preserve and environmental area affirms that destructive divisions can heal, bringing strength and unity.
The Gyeonggi Tourism Organization (GTO) is responsible for the assembly of the photographs that not only will be on display in Montgomery, but will also be on display in Huntsville. These photographs, will then take a trip to Germnay to be on display in August. Alabama is the only state in the US to host this exhibit.

HONORARY CONSUL GENERAL'S CORNER
| | |
By Michael Johnson
Dear Alabama-Germany friends:
Frühling liegt in der Luft! Springtime has finally arrived on both sides of the Atlantic (in fact, perhaps almost earlier in Germany than in Alabama this year), and with it lots of events and happenings of interest to our community. As expected under Chancellor Merkel's Grosse Kolation for the new Federal Government, the Federal Cabinet has just passed a minimum wage law, setting it at €8.50 ($11.75) per hour. This marks a big change for Germany, since German law previously did not mandate a minimum wage (to the surprise of many Americans). Employers were simply prohibited from paying workers "immoral wages" - but without any definition of that meant. In practice, trade unions and business groups were in charge of regulating those wages. The German Parliament will review the legislation this summer, and it is expected to take force in January 2015.
