Student Ambassador Program Started at SVCTE
More than 50 Silicon Valley Career Technical Education   students representing our six school districts volunteered their time to learn how to serve as a student ambassador. Student Ambassador training was held on September 26. Students learned about their leadership traits through DiSC training, guided by professional speaker, Joshua Schneider. DiSC is a personal assessment tool that is used to help improve productivity, teamwork, and communication.

Students received speaking and speech writing instruction from local Toastmaster, Sheila Stevens. As part of the training, each SVCTE Student Ambassador received a uniform and visited classrooms to practice guiding public tours for  our guests who took tours of SVCTE.  To schedule a tour, contact Marysol Ruiz at [email protected] or Sylvia Yan at [email protected].

Veterinary Assisting Studies come to life

SVCTE's Veterinary Assisting Program recently held Hug-A-Horse, Chicken, and Cadaver Day.  Each event features a variety of hands-on learning opportunities for students.

Del Mar High School student, Nicole Duran, said she enjoys the activities because it is exciting to learn about an animal's anatomy and then be able to touch the various anatomies through the hands-on activities on the horses and chickens.

During Cadaver Day, Veterinary Assisting students performed soft tissue dissections on fresh dog and cat cadavers.   Students from Forensic Science, Medical Assisting, and Medical Science/Health Careers also participated in the lab activities.

At Hug-A-Horse day, Duran and her classmates learned how to work safely with horses, give horses a basic exam, examine a horse's hoof, and how to untie, lead, and retie a horse.  The event is held three times a year with different learning opportunities at each event.
Students Create Stunning Dresses out of Toilet Paper
Students in SVCTE's Fashion Design & Textile Art class recently made amazing dresses out of toilet paper as part of an Unconventional Materials Challenge.

Throughout the year, their instructor Sheila Sanford, challenges them to create dresses using unconventional materials such as trash bags, toilet paper, and discarded pattern pieces. The results are incredible.

Over 300 Participate in SVCTE's Two-Day Blood Drive
Silicon Valley Career Technical Education's Medical Science/Health Careers class hosted a successful two-day, student-led blood drive earlier this month. More than 320 students, staff, and community members registered to donate blood during the drive.

Brittany Aronson, from Westmont High School & SVCTE's Medical Science/Health Careers class, said that "donating blood is very rewarding and helps save lives." She said that she donates blood every two months.

Donors had to meet certain requirements including age and height, plus have a signed permission slip (if under 18) prior to donating blood. Each donor completed a computerized online health questionnaire at check-in and reviewed a packet of donor safety information. Donors also received a free t-shirt.

SVCTE's Medical Science/Health Careers instructor, Collette Betters added, "Our students really take pride in donating blood. It is inspiring to see so many students sign up to donate blood and make a difference in someone's life."
The blood donated at the drive is used at local hospitals throughout the Bay Area.

PipeTrades Training Center Field Trip

SVCTE's Construction Technology, Electrical Maintenance, and HVAC classes visited the Pipe Trades Training Center on October 9 as part of a Career Trades Expo sponsored by the South Bay Apprenticeship Coordinators Association, Santa Clara & San Benito Counties Building Trades Council, and the Santa Clara County Construction Careers Association.

At the event, students learned about the different employment opportunities available to them in their chosen field, including the working conditions, salary and benefits. College and apprenticeship information was available as well as a variety of construction, architecture and engineering information.

Students were able to interact with a variety of hands-on activities on display including tools of the trade.

The Navy Band, The Destroyers Perform at SVCTE

The Navy Region South West band, The Destroyers, performed two (AM & PM) shows for SVCTE's students as part of the Navy's 240th birthday celebration on October 14. Students enjoyed a variety of music performed by The Destroyers, which included modern day hits such as Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae).

Representatives from the Navy, Marines, and Army provided information on the variety of career options, scholarships, and college opportunities available through the military.

Nineteen SVCTE Classes Are Now UC a-g Approved

Nineteen of Silicon Valley Career Technical Education's (SVCTE) courses are now UC a-g approved.   Recent additions to SVCTE's growing list of approved courses include: Mobile App Design & Computer Coding class, Culinary Arts, Baking & Catering, Precision Machining, and Veterinary Assisting. SVCTE hopes to have more courses approved by the end of the school year.

SVAE Medical Assisting Students Participate in Health Fair

At MetroED's Employee Health Fair on September 18, Silicon Valley Adult Education's (SVAE) Medical Assisting students provided free blood pressure and blood sugar level testing to employees that requested it.  The event provided students an opportunity to practice some of the skills they  learned.  SVAE's Medical Assisting students will also hold a Blood Drive on December 4.

 Alyssa Lynch

Across the state, the spotlight is on CTE.  This week, the Senate held hearings on Carl Perkins Reauthorization and the California Department of Education released the details of the CTE Incentive Grant.  The grant deadline is November 30 and MetroED's staff is working fast and furious to gather the details needed to submit our grant application.
In adult education, the South Bay Consortium for Adult Education (SBCAE) has set up a website that will provide updates and information on their annual plan and allocations.  SVAE is one of five school districts and  two community college districts that are active members of SBCAE.
MetroED is an active community partner and is participating in San Jose's TechHire Initiative and the Santa Clara County Opportunity Youth Partnership (OYP).  MetroED will be a sponsor of the Silicon Valley Business Journal's, The Employer/Educator Partnership: Cultivating the Talent Pipeline event on November 12 at San Jose State University. I will serve as a panelist and Patty Nation from Xilinx will serve as Moderator.
