Head of School Happenings

Even after 36 years in education, no experience compares to August 26th, as I welcomed Wolcott students to the first day of school. That rush of excitement continues. There have been so many highlights from these first weeks of school. Here are a few:
  • Listening to faculty members share how they have incorporated different strategies and created lesson plans designed to teach to the strengths of the students.
  • Watching students collaborate in school work, develop friendships and help shape our community.
  • Hearing students' reactions to each new experience, whether it be a surprise visit from a civic leader, a physical education class at the West Loop Athletic Club, or a Physics field trip to the Museum of Science and Industry.
  • Observing students debate topics ranging from the British colonization of India to the creation of the Wolcott mascot.
It is clear to me that Wolcott offers an educational environment where students are free to take academic risks instead of constantly confronting barriers to entry. I am energized by the students, faculty and warm feeling of the school community. Thanks to the generosity of all of our supporters, Wolcott can now say 'school is in session.'
"Wolcott is a place where teachers say they want to teach using whatever strategies help you learn best, and they mean it!" - Wolcott student ambassador speaking at local high school fair.

Meet the WolcottArts Team

Spotlight on WolcottArts
Wolcott's Creative Arts Program
Led by a team of educators who are practicing artists, students are singing, creating art blogs and practicing improvisational skills. The goal of WolcottArts is to create an interdisciplinary dialogue for students to examine the processes by which they learn about themselves, each other and their impact on global culture. Engaging in the arts as a way to foster self-discovery and critical thinking, WolcottArts is a fundamental part of our curriculum. Read our Theatre I, Art and Visual Culture and Vocal Ensemble course descriptions to learn more.
After School Academic Coaching
Our academic coaching program, offered daily, is thriving. Staffed by faculty and academic coaches, students are taking advantage of this resource. As one student noted, "I stay after school for coaching because I'm able to complete most of my homework and know that I'm doing it correctly. I now have much more time at home to do the things I enjoy most." We attribute the success of this program to our academic coaches. Many thanks to Margaret Cohn, Julie Gertler, Elana Lazarus and Stephanie Strauss for generously offering their expertise.
