IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - LAB SERVICES

In an effort to streamline current DNA testing and expand services to our membership the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) has entered into an agreement with Delta Genomics Laboratories to provide DNA testing services. This move is currently in transition with a target completion date of September 15th, 2014. Although we are working towards a seamless transition we ask that members have patience through this process and make the CSA office aware of any issues on either new samples submitted or samples that are currently being processed. DNA testing request process for CSA members has not changed and as in the past please contact the CSA office for all your testing needs and with any questions or concerns you may have.

We would like to thank Quantum Genetix (GenServe Laboratories) for their years of service to CSA members and we look forward to working through this transition with them and on future initiatives.

BREED IMPROVEMENT

Genotyping Incentive Program

For a limited time the CSA is offering a reduced price on genotyping tests for CSA members enrolled in the Total Herd Enrollment (THE) program:
  • $25 per sample for GGP-LD Profile - Savings of $20
  • $45 per sample for GGP-HD Profile - Savings of $45

DNA kits must be ordered by October 15, 2014 with DNA samples submitted no later than November 30, 2014. Funds will be allocated on a first-come, first serve basis. This incentive may expire early if funding is fully utilized.

A second way to save! Any genotyped animal that has an ultrasound record submitted by April 30, 2015 will qualify for an additional $5 credit to the members account! To qualify data must be collected under the same criteria as the previous Ultrasound Rebate Program.

Fall 2014 EPDs
The CSA 2014 Fall EPDs have been released and are available on our CSA website, or CSA search site at http://search.simmental.com . Information on breed averages and percentiles can be found at http://www.simmental.com/epd2.htm.
REGISTRY INFORMATION

Percentage required for purebred status.

Producers purchasing bulls from the United States or semen from American bulls should be aware of differences that exist between Canada and the United States in the percentage of Simmental required to qualify for purebred status. The Canadian Simmental Association requires a male to be 15/16 Simmental to reach purebred status while the American Simmental Association accepts males who are 7/8 Simmental or less by Canadian standards as purebred. As is regulated by the Federal government through the Animal Pedigree Act, it is the responsibility of the purchaser to ensure that these bulls meet the requirement of being 15/16 Simmental if they wish to register that animal in the Canadian Simmental herd book as a purebred. Please see our website under CSA Bylaws for our Upgrade Table (Determination of Simmental Fractions.)

Viewing SNP Results Using the Internet
The CSA staff have been receiving a number of inquiries regarding the status of DNA results for both registered & unregistered animals.

Members can inquire about the status of DNA tests that are being conducted for their animals by using either their Online System or the Pedigree Search function on the CSA website.

Depending on the animal that you are inquiring about, Online users can obtain this information by logging into their system and navigating under either of the three areas listed below.

     My Registered Males
     My Registered Females
     My Un-Registered Calves

Example: My Registered Males - from the Online System
