REGISTRY INFORMATION
THE HERD LETTER FOR 2014 IS "B"
Change of Contact Information
It is very important to notify the CSA office when there is a change to your contact information (address, phone number, email etc). This allows the office to keep records up to date and process all incoming work in a timely and efficient manner. Please note that we cannot take credit card or any other membership changes over the phone (address, name etc). The credit card form and membership amendment forms can be found online at www.simmental.com. Membership Amendment forms must be signed by all persons on the account with signing authority.
CSA Policy on Genetic Defects
The CSA encourages producers to report to the CSA office Simmental influenced animals suspected of having a genetic defect. These reports are handled with utmost confidentiality and are part of our ongoing commitment to genetic improvement for the Canadian Beef Industry. Visit the CSA website for the CSA Policy on Genetic Defects.
Do your Herd Sires have DNA?
Now is the time to make sure all your natural service sires have been DNA tested. If you have purchased any bulls, it is your responsibility to ensure they have DNA on file in accordance with CSA bylaws.
Are you collecting semen on a bull?
AI sires must be parentage verified in order to register their progeny. If you are entering a bull into an AI facility, drawing semen on-farm, or even considering drawing semen on a bull in the future, be sure your bull is or can be parentage verified by pulling hair on him and his dam so you will be able to readily parent verify him.
Submitting DNA Samples
This notice is a reminder to our membership that it is necessary for the SNP application forms to accompany hair samples when sent to the laboratory. Members are to phone, email or fax their DNA request to the CSA office prior to sending in your samples. The CSA staff then produces and sends you the appropriate Application form that is to accompany the hair sample, and electronically submits the animal information to the laboratory.
If you require further explanation, please contact the Registry staff at 1.866.860.6051.

BREED IMPROVEMENT
Calving and Yearling Data
Members are reminded that in order for records to be included in the upcoming EPD run, data must be received at the CSA office no later than June 1st. It is important to submit records on complete groups of calves. Failing to report cattle that underperform causes the better performing animals to appear worse.
Breed Improvement Meeting
The CSA Breed Improvement Committee will be meeting in March. If you have items of a breed improvement nature or questions, please contact BIC Chair, Kelly Ashworth.
Current Averages and Percentiles
As we approach breeding season, we would like to remind breeders that the CSA has re-aligned our EPD's with those of the ASA through our joint North American evaluation. Simmental EPDs are now directly comparable between countries.
Genetically Enhanced EPD's In the next run of our genetic evaluation the CSA plans to incorporate genomic information. EPDs may not necessarily appear different, but younger animals with genomic linkage tests should have EPDs closer to their actual value and have a higher accuracy. The more animals that are genomically tested which are related to your herd, the more accurate the prediction will be.
