REGISTRY INFORMATION

THE HERD LETTER FOR 2014 IS "B"

Percentage required for purebred status.
Producers purchasing bulls from the United States or semen from American bulls should be aware of differences that exist between Canada and the United States in the percentage of Simmental required to qualify for purebred status. The Canadian Simmental Association requires a male to be 15/16 Simmental to reach purebred status while the American Simmental Association accepts males who are 7/8 Simmental or less by Canadian standards as purebred. As is regulated by the Federal government through the Animal Pedigree Act, it is the responsibility of the purchaser to ensure that these bulls meet the requirement of being 15/16 Simmental if they wish to register that animal in the Canadian Simmental herd book as a purebred.

Transferring Registration Papers
When completing transfer information on your sale animals, please provide the following Buyer information:
  • Buyer's CSA member # (when at all possible)
  • Buyer's first & last name (& Farm Name - if applicable
  • Buyer's complete mailing address, including postal code
  • Sale Date of the animal being sold
  • Signature of Seller
  • Breeding information on bred females - INCLUDING Name & Registration number of Natural Service &/or AI Sire
  • Signature of the owner of dam when AI was done and/or Signature of natural service

It is important that the buyers name and address be completed correctly. Errors can result in animals being transferred to incorrect accounts, or duplicate accounts created for the same owner(s).

Requesting SNP Tests (via Email or Fax)

Just a reminder of our two (2) different types of SNP tests:

  1. GGP panel (Geneseek Genomic Profiler) ($ 45 + taxes) - required for ALL Natural Service Sire purposes in & proving parentage of animals born from a natural mating.
  2. 50K density panel ($ 90 + taxes) - the minimum requirement for all AI sires & Donor Dams. If a bull is used for AI purposes whether he is drawn at a Stud &/or for On Farm use he must be genotyped with a minimum of a 50K test. Calves tat are born as a result of an A.I. mating cannot be registered without this test being done.

Therefore, for those of you that order SNP tests via email (or fax) please remember the following:

  • Specify the exact test type that you require for the animals you are sampling.
  • Also, specify if you want the complete SNP kit mailed to you. Or, if you would prefer the SNP application form be emailed back to you to expedite the process and save on postage costs.

If you require further explanation, please contact the Registry staff at 1.866.860.6051.

BREED IMPROVEMENT

Submitting DNA Samples? Plan ahead and get the samples in early!

If you require parentage or DNA testing through the Canadian Simmental Association (CSA) it is important to get them in the mail sooner rather than later. During this time of year with the influx of samples, testing/reporting can take longer than the normal turnaround of 21-28 days, depending on what is being done. Plan ahead and get your sample(s) in at least six weeks before you absolutely need results. Remember, paperwork that is generated by CSA must be sent with the samples.

If you have any questions please email [email protected] or call our office 1.866.860.6051.
