Dear Friends,
We enter the final weeks of 2012. A time of celebration, parties, family, gifts, ritual, and the beautiful December light that ignites the sky like no other time of year.
Recently I've been inspired by an insight I've had in my work with my therapist. Our practices, whether it be running, cycling, working out, journaling, or Yoga in all its myriad paths and variations: the asana, the pranayama, the meditation; this isn't actually The Work. This is the preparation for the work.
It's like a garden. To create a bountiful garden of vegetables or flowers we can't just toss seeds onto the earth and expect them to grow into strong and beautiful fruit...some of those seeds will find earth to root into and survive and grow despite our inattention. But if we choose the space carefully; a space that gets plenty of sunlight, plenty of nourishing rain, safe from animals and predators; if we till and fertilize the soil; if we pull the weeds to keep the garden spacious and open, and treat it with respect and love, THEN it grows into the light and bears fruit who's seeds contain the DNA of this strong and beautiful plant.
The same is true for us. When we honor the temple of the the body by nourishing it with healthy food and exercising it's muscles and bones and skin and blood; when we stop numbing ourselves from discomfort but actually use it to guide us, remembering that we can't selectively numb (when we numb pain, we also numb joy!); when we create space in our day to appreciate; when we seek stillness to listen with the ears of our heart: when we are willing to forgive, offer compassion and kindness to both those folks we touch and even more importantly to ourselves; when we see each challenge as an opportunity for growth and awakening, then...we've set the stage for the real work to begin.
It happens alchemically once the energy of the body, heart, intellect and spirit work together as ONE.
The result: a richer, more meaningful life. Lived on purpose.
This is why we practice.

|
I will be co-leading a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Program beginning January 2013 with Michelle Dawson of the Body Art Studio in Chester New York. Designed both for those interested in teaching Yoga as well as for those looking to deepen their practice and understanding of this ancient science, we've created a contemporary and artistic program to support you in going deeply into your heart & living a more meaningful and empowered life.

Michelle Dawson combines the best of Eastern tradition and Modern rebellion to reach the sacred poise of body and mind. She brings to class passion and grace, encouraging students to push the boundaries of their own practice. With a teaching style enriched with experience and study, Michelle's students marvel in her invigorating, uplifting, and balanced approach to Yoga. Her classes are an extension of her love for art and music, and her influences include Mehndi, the ancient Indian art of adorning the body with Henna. Michelle is an Ananda Ashram-certified yoga teacher and the owner and operator of The Body Art Studio.

Being willing to know and love ourselves, and to find what truly makes us feel deeply and strongly, gives us the advantage of being able to attract and choose the right people with whom to share ourselves, whether those relationships fall into recognizable roles
or not.
