$1.5 Million Raised for Legal Aid

Thanks to you, the Legal Aid Foundation raised a record $1.5 million in its annual fundraising drive for Colorado Legal Services. This remarkable success is the direct result of your ongoing commitment to improve access to our civil justice system.

Law firm giving accounted for 65 percent of the total amount raised, with 114 donor firms giving at the Leadership Level of $400 per lawyer in the firm. The number of individual donors increased by over 20 percent, and a significant number of donors doubled the size of their gifts this year to do more to help meet the large need for legal assistance among low-income Coloradans.

Legal Aid Volunteers Recognized for Outstanding Pro Bono

In recognition of extraordinary commitment to equal justice, the national Legal Services Corporation presented its Pro Bono Service Awards in Denver on July 22nd.

One of the recipients was long-time Legal Aid Foundation donor Chief Judge Donald E. Campbell of Colorado's Fourth Judicial District. Since retiring in 2010, he has volunteered two full days each week in the Colorado Springs office of Colorado Legal Services (CLS). Judge Campbell meets with seniors and other clients, and advises CLS attorneys on evidentary issues or unusual legal problems confronting their clients.

Additional recipients of the Pro Bono Service Award were Holland & Hart, Judge Christina Ebner, Ronald Stowell, and Gina Witzenkorn. To learn more about the volunteers and their pro bono work, click here

Access to Justice and the Judiciary

A forum on the importance of civil legal aid was convened last month in Denver where Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael L. Bender and Judge William J. Martinez of the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado were joined by supreme court justices from four other states. A video of the forum can be viewed here and offers interesting judicial perspectives on various access to justice issues.
