Remember to Recognize
Bullying Awareness Day

submitted by Carol Zabel, Western Regional Coordinator

On May 12, 2010 Wisconsin Act 306 was enacted into law. This law requires:

  • School boards to adopt a policy prohibiting bullying by pupils
  • School districts to establish school safety plans
  • And recognize Wednesday of the 4th week in September as Bullying Awareness Day.

For simple ideas for recognizing Bullying Awareness Day, check out www.pacer.org. There are activities listed for younger students, as well as, a link to Facebook page for Pacer Teens against bullying where you can get ideas from teens for teens for bullying prevention.

Or check out Community Matters, http://community-matters.org, to learn about Safe School Ambassadors, an evidence-based bystander empowerment program. If you like what you read about this program and/or the Community Matters organization, you may want to register for the Building the Hearts of Success School conference. Rick Phillips the founder and executive director of Community Matters will be the keynote speaker addressing the audience on "Transforming School Climate from the Inside-Out:  A Roadmap for Success".
Best Practices for Supporting LGBTQ+

GSAFE and Mental Health America of Wisconsin partnered to produce the new resource for middle and high school educators, Best Practices for Supporting LGBTQ+ Students as They Return to School

Please consider sharing this in love, respect, encouragement, support, and appreciation with educators that you know, including out-of-school and after school workers!

For those working with younger students, Welcoming Schools has some great resources on how to start the year off with a welcoming classroom. Check their resources out here and here.
